Garrett Turbo Kits FAQ

  1. will a garrett turbo charger work on my 2002 ford focus.?

i have a neighbor hes a older dude but he just gave me a turbocharger FOR FREE so i took it.. now i was wondering if it fits my 2002 ford focus zx5.. it has a 2.0 zetec engine.. here is the number he told me the turbo is. GT25-GT35 and he thinks it most likely goes to a turbo diesel..i know it wont just bolt on but i do have a intercooler and the piping is no problem i was just wondering if it would work because of the fact that he said it might belong to a diesel..

ANSWER: (Yes it can work . But seeing that you are turbo inept. You need to research turbo charging a car and what is involved . You can't just bolt on a turbo and go . You need a turbo manifold , downpipe , turbo piping , intercooler , BOV , etc.)

  2. Want to turbo 2000 civic si?

I have a 2000 Civic Si. Trying to turbo it but i want at min 300whp. I always want a garrett gt turbo?

ANSWER: (Who's going to pay for this? If you go to a proper shop and tell them this is what you want, they will let you know what's necessary to make it happen.)

  3. Can I rebuild an ebay turbo with garrett internals?

I was wondering if I can rebuild an ebay turbocharger with garrett internals. I have a non ball-bearing, T3/T4 60 trim turbo. If I can please link me with a kit and/or instructions on how to do so. Thanks! :D

ANSWER: (What car is this for?)

  4. can a d15 civic motor handle a garrett t25 turbo?

ok ive got a 1995 honda civic sedan d15 motor in it i belive and a friend of mine gave me his garrett t25 turbo i was wonderinf if my car can handle it and if so what do i need to hook it up?

ANSWER: (you should ask your friend to help you install it since it came from his car. honda makes strong engines period. so it can handle a turbo. as long as you don't overkill on the boost. maybe 8psi max for it to still be reliable. if you want more than that you should look into an engine swap or overhaul with stronger internals)

  5. What garrett turbo model is this? part number 465209-3?

What garrett turbo model is this? part number 465209-3

    ANSWER: (no idea sorry..)

  6. How to balance a turbo?

I have a T25 garrett from a nissan 300zx, the turbo year is a 1990. I want to rebuild it but idk where I can get it balance or if i really need to get it balance or if i can do it my self lol. So can I do it my self or I need someone with a machine to do it for me? and whats a good place to go near Amherst MA?

ANSWER: (The cheapest places to get a turbo rebuilt is either turbochargers.com or blaast performance. Both of them offer cheap rebuilds and would probably beat local prices by a considerable amount. I live near michigan turbo and they wanted over 300 just to replace seals on a t3/t04e hybrid. Now that i look at it turbochargers.com has changed their pricing so blaast performance is the way to go. Their website and phone number are in the souce box.)

  7. where can i get a replacement turbo for my 97 eclipse gst?

my stock t25 garrett turbo went out after about 90,000 on my car need to find a replacement one can anybody help. was lookin in spending around 400 for it.....dont want to modify anything on my car so just looking for the stock turbo.....thankx for the help

ANSWER: (auto parts store or dealership)

  8. I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS Automatic and I want to upgrade my engine with a Garrett® Turbo GT Tuner Kit?

has anyone else done this and do I need to upgrade anything else i.e. computer chip?

ANSWER: (if nobody with first hand knowledge answers you. If you but the kit along with install instructions it will recommend or advise you of any additional things that r need and or just recommendations if the chip needs to be changed and doesn't come in the kit the paperwork frt the kit will inform . you)

  9. is it a good idea to turbo intercool a hyundai getz 1.1?

im planning to bring my getz to a shop to have a complete turbo kit installed into it. Im planning to get the garrett gt15. what do you think guys?

ANSWER: (nope, unless you want competition whatever the price.Expect bent con rods, burnt exhaust valves etc as the engine will not take the beating.)

  10. I bought a Garrett t3/t4 50trim turbo off of a friend for my RSX. What else do I need to get?

I have an 03 RSX Type S, and like I said I bought a Garrett T3/T4 50trim Turbo. Right now my current mods are a GReddy Ti-C catback exhaust, and a AEM Short Ram Intake. I know I will have to get rid of my intake. What else will I need to install? I know I will need to send my ECU in for a re-tune, I was thinking HONDATA, most people tell me GReddy EManage is not that great; also I know that I will need a new exhaust manifold, and piping for the Turbo and Intercooler, but unsure on where to get it and which one to get exactly. Also, what engine internals do you recommend? I was thinking maybe new camshaft, pistons, injectors, fuel system, plugs, unsure what else I might need. Any info would be nice. As you can see I am pretty new to the tunning area, and appreciate your input. Thanks, Rob P.S. Any vulgar answers will be reported.

ANSWER: (In all honesty it would be cheaper to sell this turbo and just buy a complete kit. A good quality kit for your car is about $3,500, and has EVERYTHING right down to the fuel management. http://www.turbo-kits.com/rsx_turbo_kits.html Here's a good place to start looking. Now consider that a quality manifold will be $800+, the intercooler $500+, a VEHICLE SPECIFIC piping kit is $300-$500, fuel injectors $500, blow off valve $300, wastegate $300, Then there is the fabrication of parts, necessary fittings, and of course tuning. You can EASILY spend double of what a good kit costs to get less power.)

  11. Turbo kit and BOV suggestions?

I have a 99 GST Spyder, want to do some mod's for more power, not necessarily "trick it out". I am looking at a Garrett T28 turbo kit and a HKS BOV for about a $1000. Any better suggestions or ideas? Appreciate the help all!

ANSWER: (Sorry but the Garret turbo by itself is $1,300. You will also need the manifold, and get a good one, around $800-$1,200, then the new "J" pipe, intercooler piping, and other little fittings. The HKS SSQV BOV is $300 by itself, so your getting a Garrett for $700...........)

  12. Will this aftermarket turbo bolt onto my truck?

I got a Garrett turbo a couple days ago and it wasn't made for my truck. Is it true that all turbos are universal fitting? As to where this turbo will work with my truck as long as I get the turbo kit? Would I be able to run headers or would I run the turbo manifold?I really dont know anything about turbos, so any help is greatly appreciated.BTW- My truck is a 2005 Dodge Ram 4.7 V8

ANSWER: (yes all turbos are universal. you are going to to need a manifold... or 2 i should say because your car is a V8 so one for each head. you would have been better off using a supercharger. If i was you id try and sell or trade the turbo to get a vortex supercharger for your truck.)

  13. what kind of rebuild kit can i get for the turbo on my 89 volvo 740?

i pulled the turbo off my 89 volvo 740 turbo and i need to find a rebuild kit. the numbers on the turbo are tb03 and 466672-3002. the turbo is a garrett turbo. is this turbo a t3 turbo. if so can i get the garrett t3 rebuild kit and get it going again. i need to get it going asap. thanks.

ANSWER: (if you like to do everything yourself you can maybe rebuild your center with just the bearing/seal kit. but i suggest you consider buying a whole new/rebuilt center and doing it that way. less worry about getting it aligned right( if you dont put the wheels back on the EXACT same place the balence will be off). with a whole center you just bolt it all back together and go. i cant tell you where to look but if you have a shop around for big trucks you might ask them. internet too. always prime you new turbo with the best darn oil you have when assembling. id force some in there with a hose and squeeze bottle. i wouldn't know about garret but i replaced the center in my IHI turbo with a BRAND NEW one for less than 500$. the rebuilt one was like 350 or so with a core.)

  14. I heard that the garrett turbo has ran its course?

    It maybe true your thoughts?

ANSWER: (Who says so? Don't tell me you believe everything you read in car forums. lol. Garrett still makes some of the best turbochargers around. They make them for practically everything out there from production cars to kits for your sport compact. They are owned by Honeywell so I doubt they'll be going out of business anytime soon.)

  15. what kind of turbo can i use on my sisters 1989 volvo 740 turbo.?

ive been looking for a replacement turbo for my sisters car for a long time. i want to replace it because it leaks really bad. she goes through a quart of oil about once a month. the car still runs surprisingly but i don't want her driving it like that. i want to say those b230f engines run between 14-17 psi of boost. the engine is a 2.3L L4 engine. those engines run really well when they work correctly. ive been looking at the garrett turbo's. what would be a good turbo to install that would give it a little more kick. ide like to see around 240+ hp. it was stock at 165hp and 195 torque. boost kicked in around 2000 rpm. has anyone done this before. im lost when it comes to picking a turbo.

ANSWER: (go to a performance mechanic, not a tires, and oil changes mechanic and ask what they suggest. I went to a mechanic who was builing performacne cars since the 1980's and he did my 1999 GMC jimmy right. Shes now putting out 250 horses. Stock 190 and it was under 3000$. I just ahve a small supercharger in mine. I dont know turbos too well but the mechancis will.)

ANSWER: (Your mod list is pretty good, except for I would ditch Hondata as it's garbage and go for Ectune. Look like all you need is pistons/rods and you're ready for more boost. Currently I wouldn't push it past 350WHP on a nearly perfect tune as B16 ringlands and rods are going to be the weakest point. Make sure timing isn't too agressive and the meth injection should help you out a little bit with detonation. Your turbine is really good combo for the motor as is, but if you're shooting for higher HP, the log mani will have to go and the small ass exhaust housing if you're going to push more boost, because more boost = more heat build-up. The Heartbreaker - Amount of boost means nothing, it's all about how much a turbine can flow resulting in WHP. It's not amount boost that break OEM internals, it's the HP. Compression also doesn't really matter, it's the strength of the internals. I personally have a friend who is running 10:1 compression LS-Vtec making over 620WHP for a couple of years now. You're right with one thing, on a B16 having any detonation will result in immediate failure, they're not forgiving like the LS motors are.)

  17. Thinking about putting a k20a engine swap with a Garrett GT30R turbo in a Civic?

I may have the opportunity to purchase a 1994 Honda Civic. It currently has a k20a in it and it has about 200hp. I was wondering where I would be standing hp range if I put a Garrett GT30R turbo in it. Or if there was a better turbo system to put into it. I am shooting for 350hp+ for the Civic.

ANSWER: (at 10psi with a Greddy e-manage ultimate Boost controller, you should get pretty close to 350whp. Little things to add more hp would be: Cold air Intake from the turbo (probably have to fab it yourself)Dump tube for the waste gate (very easy to make and gains about 10hp)2.5" exhaust (not bigger because of back pressure)lighter wheels (less weight=faster spooling time for the turbo)lightened flywheelstronger clutchCAT delete if your town allows it.Tubular exhaust manifold, they have better flow than drag manifolds.)

  18. What kind of garrett turbo is this? its off a Saab. Turbo ID is sl0376a 465181-2911932 made in england?

    ANSWER: (A 465181-2 is a TB25 don't know what the 2911932 is though.)

  19. garrett T25-T25BB turbo upgrade question?

I have a Mazdaspeed Protege with a stock garrett T25, and im thinking about upgrading to a T25BB. its a little bit bigger and provides a bit more boost, albeit a few more seconds of lag. Any ideas on what parts im gonna need to do this?

ANSWER: (You'd really be better off upgrading the intercooler piping and intercooler first. Make sure it's breathing as best as it possibly can before getting into the expensive mods.)

  20. What's better? A Garrett turbo or a Green?

    I have a Subaru WRX '08 2.5 L and I'm looking for a turbo upgrade.

ANSWER: (Garret or HKS or GReddy.)

  21. What kind of turbo kit could i hook up to a 96 oldsmobile lss?

i'm lookin to find out which turbo i can sinc with my 96 oldsmobile lss which has a 3.8L motor (non supercharged) please help!!! is it the Garrett?

ANSWER: (Why do you want to turbo a grocery getter?)

  22. Civic with turbo stalling at idle...?

2000 Civic with a Garrett turbo... for the past few months, while at idle like at a stop light, it will stall. We thought it might be because he isn't letting it warm up alllll the way before driving it, but it's done it before when he's just gotten off the highway... like he gets off at the exit, and it starts to stall and he had to pull off the road.... but like I said, it usually does it at stop lights... for no reason. He's adjusted the idle, and it's still doing it, and just tonight, it stalled about 3 times in a matter of 10 minutes..... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!All-Star, which way is he supposed to turn the screw...? Is it supposed to be clock-wise or counter clock-wise...?All-Star, which way is he supposed to turn the screw...? Is it supposed to be clock-wise or counter clock-wise...?

ANSWER: (OK, whats been done about fuel management, is there a missing link installed, has there been a timing control added to retard timing under boost, is there any kind of aftermarket engine management? there are so many variables and without knowing EXACTLY what has been done it could be a million different things.)

  23. How to install two Garrett T-22 turbos on a 1984 Nissan 300ZX?

what parts will i need and how do do the installim not worried about money for the project, i have that, i need to know what parts i will be needing and tips on the oiling system for the turbos, i already have the two turbos i just need everything else

ANSWER: (Since your engine would only be a VG30E(T), you only have the option of doing a single turbo in you are naturally aspirated. There would be a lot of fabricating to get twin turbos on an engine originally designed for just one. I suggest finding a good, low milage used VG30DETT from a 1990-1996 Z32 300ZX Twin Turbo, ECU and wiring harness and just swapping that into your car. Then you can bolt up two Garrett turbos that are made for that engine. With that swap, you get approximately 300hp, which is far more than than the Z31's output. Swap on the new turbos, free flowing exhaust, better intake filters, injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, intercooler and you're looking at some serious gains in torque and horsepower. You said money is no option, than that's probably the most cost effective solution you have right there.)

  24. what else will i need for a bigger turbo?

i have a subaru wrx 2002 and im planning on buying Garrett T28RS turbo , will i need a bigger intercooler also ? or what else and how much bhp does this model of car have ? and how much will it go up to if i get it

ANSWER: (yes but it will probably not work becasue the turbo system is designed to give maximum out the engine...so it pointless)

  25. Can an already turbo'd car fit almost any other turbo on it with the right header and piping?

I have a turbo'd car but want to put a bigger one on. Are there universal turbo's or do they normally fit the same? Also can same manufacturer turbo's be swapped out? I have a garrett turbo on there right now, so can it be swapped with a bigger garrett turbo?

ANSWER: (First off, depends on the car... for the most part, a garrett will fit just about any application with the proper piping size and angle. but as mentioned before, a bigger turbo =/= more power. you really only need a bigger turbo after you've built up your engine and maxed out the potential boost on your stock turbo. Most stock turbos can pump out around 15-17 PSI, again, depending on the car.)

  26. will a larger turbo fit on my 1.8tdi mk1 focus?

the mk1 diesel engined focus is fitted with a garrett gt15 turbo (i think). is there another (more powerful) turbo that will bolt on directly to it. the original turbo is assisted by an egr (exhaust gas recirculation)valve, egr cooler, map (manifold absolute pressure) sensors and a whole host of stuff i dont understand. any new turbo must accommodate such items.

ANSWER: (First, you need to back up and learn more about what you want to do. You need to know what turbo you actually have, before randomly buying another one. You need to realize that swapping a turbo will provide no gains at all, in itself. You need supporting parts. You also need to realize that the MAP, egr, etc, are not actually attached to the turbo, and do NOT have anything to do with it. That's like saying your brakes assist your tires. Yes, they're part of a system, but they don't really do anything for each other. Spend a few weeks researching this stuff, and suggested applications for your car. At that point, you can make an informed question.)

  27. Turbo Questions?

I took out a garrett turbo from a saab and was wondering if it will fit in my prelude. its a bc1. also in the front looks fine but the back is a spinning fan looking thing, it doesnt have the housing around the fan...does it need that to be mounted?

ANSWER: (yes you need to get the housing for it. and you can mount it but to be honest since you are going to need the piping and all the oil lines for it and you will need to find a manifold for it to mount onto the block and stock turbo kits only push out up to about 2psi so you are not going to get much out of it, even if it is a garret. and its gonna cost a pretty penny to get it on there so i would just check for another turbo kit on ebay. i got one for my b18c1 for about $580 shipped.pushing 10psi of boost and its capable of alot more. comes also with a turbo timer, guages. everything needed to put it on just plug and play and you git it. i would really look into that because if you buy the guages, the oil lines, the turbo timer, the manifold, the houseing for that turbo, the piping and intercooler. you are looking at a good $490 to $500 already. might as well get a better turbo t3/t4 hybrid for $80)

  28. Whats the difference between a T3 and a T4 Garrett turbos?

I don't know if theyre the same or not but thanks.

ANSWER: (The 3 and 4 correlate to the size of the turbo housing. I'm not exactly sure of the specs but I do know the T4 housing is quite a bit larger than the T3.)

  29. Can i run more boost on a standard turbo diesel or do i have to upgrade it or even get the fins etc upgraded?

Standard volvo s40 1.9tdi sport (not the new shape)Standard Garrett 61 M48 turbo

ANSWER: (I am running 30-36 psi of boost and a little more fuel, and not having any problems.)

  30. I have a standard volvo s40 sport 1.9tdi. If i upgrade the turbo from the xc90 would it blow the engine?

    2004 volvo s40 sport 1.9tdi (not the new shape).Standard turbo Garrett 61 M48

ANSWER: (my answer is try to check it out first on auto repair shop)
