Chevrolet Turbo Kit FAQ

  1. Chevrolet 6.5 liter turbo diesel?

I would like to put a larger turbo on my 95' chevy k2500 or even add another. Is this possible? I have looked for a bolt on kit or any kind of kit for that matter on the net, I just cant find anything. any Ideas?

ANSWER: (Dieselplace.com is better. I think dieselpage is a pay site. There is something known as the A team turbo that someone on diesel place is selling. Its supposed to be awesome. The GMx series turbos on the 6.5s kinda suck (I have one, so i'm allowed to say it! lol).)

  2. Can you just pour bio diesel in a 1990 Chevy k2500 6.2 diesel or do you have to buy a conversion kit?

I own a 1990 Chevy k2500 Silverado 6.2 liter turbo diesel and have been hearing about this bio diesel and was wondering, can I just pour bio diesel from a bio diesel station into my truck and it will just work or am I going to have to buy conversion kits? If I buy a conversion kit could I go back to regular diesel if I wanted to or am I stuck with what I got? Will it hurt the injection pump in any way? because I've heard it is really difficult to replace injection pump.

ANSWER: (The bio-diesel will work just fine. Bio-diesel is actually a blend of regular diesel fuel and bio-diesel fuel.)

  3. How to oil feed a twin turbo chevy 355?

We bought a twin-turbo kit and are trying to find the BEST possible way to feed both turbos. Oil return is NO problem at all. Is there a part to buy or are there ay ideas? pics? part numbers? links would help alot. Thank you.Turbo Kit is customized from God Speed Performance and the turbos are front mounted and we are not running a dry sump and the car is not fuel injected.

ANSWER: (You need a couple of 1/8" NPT T fitting Take your oil pressure sender out ofblock at rear next to dizzy. Screw in a T fitting. Put your oil pressure sender into one on the ports on the T Then on the other side of T run one 3/16 or 1/4" line up towards front of engine, then put another T on that line and split off with a 1/8" line to each turbo. That's the way I set my dad's T3/4 hybird twin turbos on his 327. I used hard line, compression fittings and NPT fittings/Ts On the return lines make sure both returns are atleast 5/8" inside dia.. but no larger than 7/8" Both returns needs to go downhill and into front part of oil pan)

  4. How much would it cost to rebuild a chevy camero 2010 engine with a turbo charger so i can have a 1000hp?

How much would it cost to rebuild a chevy camero 2010 engine with a turbo charger so i can have a 1000hp? Also how much is a body kit. This is a 1000hp camero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZUopkACR0o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hQWfEnbJ5k&feature=related

ANSWER: (well.. lets see.. probably into the $30,000 price range after the car.. and to be honest if you don't know what it would take, and want to add a body kit on top of that.. your not ready for 400hp let alone 1000hp..)

  5. How much would it cost to rebuild my chevy camero 2010 engine with a turbo charger so i can have a 1000hp?

How much would it cost to rebuild my chevy camero 2010 engine with a turbo charger so i can have a 1000hp? Also how much is a body kit.

ANSWER: (Well just a turbo wont get you to a 1000 hp and I agree with Scott 30-50 k is not that far off since there is no enginering on how well the engine will stand up to a 1000 hp build and all the parts would be custom and you will need all the softwear in the ECM to be remapped for the fuel mixture when in and out of boost and at what psi. just the rewrite work on something that new would run you about 7-10 grand)

  6. How much to put 600 hp turbo charger so that my 2010 Chevy camero has 1000HP?

How much would it cost to make my camero have a thousand horse power it has 426 right now how much would it cost to make it a 1000 hp also how much would it cost to add a body kit and a scissors doors.

ANSWER: (About 20,000$. Maybe more. It's not a matter of a 600 horsepower turbo. It's a matter of rebuilding the engine, fuel delivery, electronics, piping, etc, and building the entire engine up to 1000 horsepower. As far as scissor doors? Slap yourself.)

  7. I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS Automatic and I want to upgrade my engine with a Garrett® Turbo GT Tuner Kit?

Not a big car person but i want some extra power :) Please help if you can. I'm just curious.

ANSWER: (Yes and it is a direct bolt on. Stock 177hp Turbo 290. They do recommend an exhaust change. And fuel system modifications. They recommend doing the fuel modifications first before the turbo.Hahn's BoostFueler is recommended. Changes it from a non return system to a return system and pretty straight forward install.)

  15. 1994 Chevy v6 Camaro swap?

Hi, I have been looking at f-body camaros. I want to get one and then do a swap to a 3800 motor. I suppose I would be willing to swap to an lt1, I'm not sure of the year yet. But I wanted to know if there are any turbo kits for the 3.4 or if I went with the 3.8 if there were any out there that would be good. I know that swapping to an lt1 would probably be easier, but I would like to stay with a v6 for my own reasons.

ANSWER: (Personally, if it was my car and i had to spend the money i would do the engine swap for the lt1. You're going to spend about the same on the swap regardless of what you swap in, and the lt1 is not only a great engine to modify but there are also quite a few parts available for it. At that point if you still want to turbo it then by all means. Either stick with the current engine, and build it up, or upgrade into the V8.)

  16. transmission Problem on 1993 chevy 3/4 ton 6.5 turbo deisel?

I have a 93 chevy 4x4 turbo 6.5 deisel the116000 miles the trans. is shifting through the first 3 gears but will not shift into 4 or overdriveshifts really hard from 1st to 2nd but there is no shift kit. wondering if any one has had to deal with this before. Trucks not throwing any code lite or anything ? need help.

ANSWER: (sounds like it is time for a new tranny most shops if there good will give you a idea whats wrong if you call or take it in and let them drive it.it will cost around 1300-1800.00 to rebuild.is this a 4L80 or 4L60 those are not cheap to rebuild if its a 700R4 it should not cost as much.)

  17. looking for a Twin Turbo kit?

The engine is a chevy 350 and it is not fuel injected the engine?the engine is completely mechanical

ANSWER: (They are no twin turbo kits for a v8 chevy case the engine can be put into so many diff cars, and te turbo system can be set up so many diff ways. You want turbos, your on your own. You must fab up the system your self. You can find pre made turbo headers now which is one of the hardest parts to build so that makes it easier Then weld, cut, bend up your own piping, or use pre made bends you can buy and silicon couplers to hook the lenghts of pipes together.)

  18. Chevy Camaro, replacing the engine.?

I'm looking into buying a cheap Chevy IROC-Z camaro. Preferably '86, '87, '91, or '92.Would a Chevy Big Block And Twin Turbo kit fit in it?How about a corvette's Twin turbo kit on a Chevy Big Block engine?comments and suggestions. Note:I'd rather not spray (NOS), and the only other thing I'm planning on doing to it would be a new exaust system, new interior, and paint job, but I'd like to keep the striping from the '87.

ANSWER: (The engine bay is a tight fit on these cars.. You can get one or the other with out too much trobble, but your not gonna get a twin turbo big block in these cars with out alot of modd'ing Next why would you even need too.. You can get 400-600 HP out of a N/A small block, 700-1000 HP out of a twin turbo small block. 500-750 HP out of a N/A big block 800-2000 HP out of a twin turbo big block)

  19. can a cartunning turbo kit for a chevy 3.8L fit a chevy 3.4L?

have a chevy impala with a 3.4L v6 and i wanting to put a turbo kit from a 3.8L chevy impala on it will it just bolt on i think the motors are similar enough that they will enter change?

ANSWER: (A 3.8 is a 5.0 ( 305 ) missing two cylinders. ------------ Wrong. Explain how the 3.8L has a 60 degree bolt pattern and the SBC variants are 90 degree then!)

  20. Building a twin turbo 350 Chevy?

I own a 1978 El Camino with a mild 350 small block, and I've recently been obsessed with the idea of rebuilding it with a twin turbo kit. I've seen complete kits for about $1,500 which seems very reasonable. I want my El Camino to be a unique "sleeper" that makes people scratch their heads when it whistles by! Anyways, I've heard positive and negative things about blow though carburetors so I'm not sure what to believe. Guys that have used centrifugal power adders on carbureted engines seem to have no complaints about them, but I want a reliable 450-500 horsepower street engine that won't have many issues. I know that you can build a naturally aspirated engine with that much horsepower but it won't have nearly as good of a power band or low end torque. Plus like I said, I want to do this for the uniqueness factor. People won't give a naturally aspirated Nova with a 400hp 355 a second glance at car shows, but they might for a twin turbo '78 El Camino!I was thinking if I'm going to spend upwards of 5 grand on an engine rebuild, it might as well be something special right?!

ANSWER: (You want a reliable streetable engine? You want it to run smooth hard and clean ALL THE TIME? Electronic fuel injection my friend. Carburettors should never be someones first choice when modifying an engine. ESPECIALLY with forced induction. Two Demons on top of an 8/71 isn't too bad if you don't mind constantly having to tinker with your car. But turbo blow-through setups quite literally blow. A good aftermarket computer (ECU) that is easy to program from your laptop can be had for under $1000, then all you need is a couple of fuel rails, 8 injectors, a wiring harness for the injectors, and some fuel tank mods. Even better is to digitize the ignition as well - no more fiddling about with distributors - you set it once (on a laptop) and forget it. If you buy what is often referred to as a 3D ECU (it has a third reference axis on its maps) it will self adjust fuelling and timing to suit the prevalent atmospheric conditions. So your car will always run perfectly - whether you are driving in sub-zero temperatures, in 110 degree heat, at sea level or at 10,000 feet. If you want an engine with ridiculous amounts of torque everywhere (instant roll-on aceleration from anywhere above idle) then build yourself an engine with high compression (9.5:1) and a torque biased(towing) cam, you don't need more than 6000 RPM rev limit, use the smallest turbos you can get away with without needlessly restricting top end horsepower (a pair of Garrett GT28RS turbos in a .86 exhaust housing) with just enough boost to make the horsepower you want, and you should be smoking tyres in any gear with a flex of your toes. If you want bigger horsepower, still with good response, build a more traditional performance motor but with lower compression (8.5:1) - the usual mid-range cam, forged pistons, roller rockers (7500 RPM rev limit), Dart heads blah blah blah... Then fit a bigger pair of turbos (something like Garrett GT3037) and run more boost (15 psi), and if your tuner has any idea what they're doing, you should be seeing 850 - 1000 horsepower at the flywheel. There are a couple of workshops in the state I live in (Western Australia) that are turning out LS1 and LS2 engines with nearly 2000 horsepower at the flywheel that can be driven (only just) on the street...)

  21. Is there any way of switching a 2003 chevy s10 4.3L v6 for a v8?

Either that or does anybody know of where to buy either a turbo or a supercharger kit for it?

ANSWER: (The 4.3L block casting was made from a 350 V8 with 2 cylinders removed. A 350 will bolt right in. The serpentine belt system from the 4.3 will bolt right to the 350. If you use the 4.3L serpentine belt, make sure you use a reverse rotation water pump. Use an aftermarket throttle body and intake manifold and you can use the 4.3 computer and fuel injection. The Spike TV Power Block Trucks series did a program on this swap into an S10 a couple of years ago. They did their complete conversion for less than $10,000 which included the price of the truck. You may be able to recover some of the cost of the modifications by selling any good parts from the 4.3L setup so be careful with your disassembly. You may be able to sell the parts locally by advertising in the local newspaper classified section or you could sell the parts on EBay or Craigs List. The truck in this series used a new 350 crate motor, but you could also use a re-manufactured engine from your favorite local auto parts store. You could even get a 350 from a used truck and rebuild it. But if I were going through all of the effort to put a 350 in an S10, I would use a crate motor. You can get a brand new GM performance Parts 290 HP 350 for less than $2000. This engine will be all new parts and will have a warranty. The link below includes the parts and adapters required to drop a 350 into your S10.)

  22. turbo kit on a 3.8L v6?

My car is a 2000 Chevy Camaro with a 3.8L v6. I have no engine or performance mods. I want to add a turbo that, combined with other parts that I don't know of, can produce well over 300 horsepower. Does anyone know all the performance mods necessary to make a reliable and efficient TURBO 3800.1.What parts do I need?2.What order do I install them so I can test each mod individually?3.Total cost approx.4.Any other mods you would consider?4.Do you have experience with the GM 3800 series 3.8L v6? My camaro is worth about 2 grand because the passenger door is damaged and nearly every piece of the piece of **** interior needs replaced. lol As far as i'm concerned it looks and runs good, but not to a potential buyer looking for a decent interior. It would never sell, and friggen ay if I can make it faster w/out paying more for insurance and gas thats the way I wanna go.

ANSWER: (if you cant get the V8 in it, then go with a supercharger. a supercharger bolts on and all u really need is a larger serpentine belt. turbochargers need the turbo, special headers, blow-off valve, and an intercooler. superchargers will give you massive power on your entire RPM curve. turbos have to spool up before you get boost. and they cost twice as much with alot more work.)

  23. How to twin turbo a 350 Chevy?

Right now I own a 1978 El Camino with a mild 350 engine, and initially I wanted to install a roots supercharger, but I thought a twin turbo kit would make it extremely fun/unique. I found a twin turbo kit on Ebay that comes with almost everything needed including the turbos for just $1180. They say the kit is good for 700 horsepower max, or 350 from each turbo. I'm looking to make 450-500 street-able horsepower. I know that in addition to the kit, I'll need to buy aftermarket heads, forged pistons, a large carburetor, and a better cam to accommodate the turbos. But what else will I need? Should I be looking at about a 7.5-1 compression ratio if I want to run 12psi boost? It says it comes with a manual boost controller, so does that mean that I can adjust the boost myself? What do you guys think of this kit in general? Do you think that I'd make LOADS of torque, because I've heard of twin turbo 350 Chevy's making over 600lb ft on 12psi? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts-Accessories_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__CHEVY-SBC-283-400-CAMARO-FIREBIRD-TWIN-TURBO-FULL-KIT_W0QQitemZ380081140853QQddnZPartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadiZ2865QQddiZ2811QQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item380081140853&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A543|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

ANSWER: (It sounds like a good kit and that you have a done enough research to know what you need, yes Manual boost control is just that, you can adjust it most likely from inside the car, however if you are looking for torque go with forced induction as a turbo requires RPM to start working and a super charger is always producing power.)

  24. How much would a 1983 Chevy Silverado be worth?

It is a 1983 Chevy Silverado, with the stock 305 in it with roughly 60,000 miles. Re-built Turbo 700 transmission. 4.5' and 6' lowering kit on it. And a full exhaust system all flowmasters and fully chrome headers.

ANSWER: (Go to kellybluebook.com. But other than that look up the base price then add what you think you should get for the extras. But that doesn't mean anyones else will want to pay that price.)

  25. Would this if on my 06 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.8L?

http://www.turbo-kits.com/sbc_turbo_kits.htmlIf it doesn't fit what twin turbo kit could i get?

ANSWER: (http://www.turbo-kits.com/silverado_turbo_kits.html the one that is under the heading silverado is the one for your truck on that same website.)

  26. I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado Regular Cab and I was look for a twin turbo kit, can u help me find on?

I want two turbos not one i keep finding just one on the internet just cant never find two

ANSWER: (Banks makes a twin turbo crate engine you might try contacting them to see if they will make a kit in the future. Only other option I see is modifiying a Dodge setup for you application.)

  27. 2005 Chevy Silverado 3500HD Duramax MPG?

What would be the gas mileage difference between an all stock one and one that has:MPI Twin Turbo kit, 4" MBRP duals, Predator Tuner REG CAB, LONG BOX, NOT DUALLY

ANSWER: (Currently, you should be seeing around 15mpg. After the turbo kit.....around 8-10. Depending on the settings of the turbo system, of course. It may be as low as 5-7.)

  28. swapping transmissions chevy truck?

dads 94 or 95 chevy truck has a 4.3 motor and a 5 spd trans, will a 350 turbo or a 700r4 bolt up to this motor with out special modification? or will i have to order a kit to make it work?

ANSWER: (Direct bolt to the motor, but your crossmember will need to be modified/replaced for the tranny to bolt to. You will also need to alter your driveshaft length to match the new tranny, and maybe a conversion u-joint as well (not sure on this). You would be better off with the 700R4 because of the OD. It is a lock-up torque convertor and you will need to do some light electrical work for the torque convertor. You can get a stand-alone controller unit for the TC (recommended) for completely automatic operation, or you could easily connect it to a toggle switch on your dash and flip it when you wanted it (but a pain and if you forget to unlock it will stall the motor when you stop). The TH350 will just need the TV cable connected to the throttle for proper shift point and operation. Being a 94/95 truck, it is computer controlled, you could mate a 4L60E tranny to it, if you want to spend a little more cash. the 4L60E is the replacement for the 700R4, and the major difference is it is electronically controlled. You could have your truck computer flashed to be an automatic truck instead of the 5spd and it will work as factory (since it was a factory option). You could use a factory automatic crossmember for your year truck and it will bolt right up. The choice is yours and cost can be a big factor. If you can, go with the 4L60E. If too much cash then do the 700R4. I say the TH350 is last choice because of the lack of OD even though it would probably be the easiest to install.)

  29. I have a th400 turbo automatic transmission which won't shift into park. What could be wrong with it?

How much would it cost me to replace/repair it? And how hard it will be to fix it by myself if possible? The tranny is in a 69 chevy truck and has a b&m shift kit. It is also rebuild. The truck is a 69 chevy stepsideCould it be the shift cable or the linkage??

ANSWER: (Could possibly be the parking pawl, Rebuilt? By a professional? Better get it checked by a professional?)

  30. How much extra hp would a turbo give my BMW?

I have a stock 97 BMW 328is w/ standard transmission, that I am wanting to make faster. My fiance has a 400+ hp Trans Am, and I want to hang with him in my car. Is this possible with a Turbo? How much horsepower will a turbo give my car? This is what I'm thinking of: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Universal-Turbo-Kit-BMW-E30-E36-E46-E39-328i-325i-330i_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQihZ025QQitemZ380050113140QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVWPlus a turbo manifold. Is there anything else I can add to this car? (never had a foriegn car before, just used to Chevy LOL)Oh, and does anyone know the stock hp for this model? Thanks for any help!Nope, not rich, just trying to avoid selling the car. I really like it, its nice and will be good to have when I have kids in a couple years but I want speed now! I used to have a Chevy 1/2 ton with a 300+ hp 350V8 and now I'm driving a car! I just want my fiance's car!I got the car cheap, kbb value at $8000 give or take $500, and bought it for $5000.Ok, rgh & insomniac:Can you both provide me with a website or email me privately telling me all about your preferred part? And why I should get that one versus the other? You both have good comments but they are contradicting, so I'm lost. But don't get carried away arguing on YA, just so we don't get into trouble. Thanks again! :-)

ANSWER: (The '97 328is has about 190bhp stock. If you want big power...the turbo is your best bet. It should bump you up to about 300 to 400 hp (which is plenty to keep up with a Trans Am since your car is much lighter). Also, unlike a supercharger, a turbo is only on when you want it to be, so it wont tear up your engine. However, because of this, you will have a bit of a lag with a single turbo...if you want to get rid of the lag, you'll have to go with a twin turbo, which will only cost a little bit more. As for your car in the long run...KEEP IT! BMW makes some of the most reliable cars out there, along with Toyota and Honda, but the beemers have much more style. I'm currently throwing a twin turbo in my 1988 325is with absolutely no hesitation at all because these cars run forever. I've had plenty of E30's that have gone to 300,000 and 400,000 miles. Sorry, I got a little carried away...I'm a BMW fanatic :) )
