Mazda Turbo Kit FAQ

  1. Where can i buy a turbo for my 2007 mazda 6i?

its a 2.3 and i cant find any turbo kits for it. also what other things could i do to improve power?

    ANSWER: (Try herehttp://bit.ly/9cWvQW)

  2. Tuning tips for a Mazda RX8?

I'm probably going to be getting a 2004-2006 RX8, and I am definitely looking at adding some performance tuning. I was thinking about a turbo, but I can't seem to find any good reviews online. I have seen some of the GReddy turbos and Esmil kits that make around 300 WHP. I am looking for something that is good, but not too crazy (powerful) and expensive. Also, would a turbo be enough, or what else would I have to do in order to make the car run well? Basically, what would I have to install with the turbo? Most likely an exhaust? I really appreciate the help. Cheers!

ANSWER: (Mr. Henry Ford had a test he gave all engineers before he hired them. He took them out to lunch and watched to see if they tasted the food before adding salt or pepper. If a prospect applied spices to the meal before tasting it they did not get hired! Please find out if you truly need to do anything before you jump in throwing parts on a car before you have mastered what you already have. The RX8 is one of the most technologically advanced automobiles that the general public can afford. Too many RX8 owners have or will ruin an otherwise great car trying to squeeze more horse power out of them then they can use.Think about it please.)

  3. Will a turbo clutch kit fit on my 86 mazda rx7 non turbo?

im looking for does it fit or not

ANSWER: (It's hard to say because there were two clutch sizes that year. One was about 8 1/2 inch in diameter and the other was 9 7/16 and one was 21 spline and the other was 23 spline. So it can not be a yes or no answer.)

  4. will a turbo clutch kit fit on my non turbo 86 mazda rx7?

86 mazda rx7 made both turbo and non turbo cars...

ANSWER: (Yes it will. Because on the second generation RX-7s (FC) the engines were the same 1.3L motors, one was simply turbocharged, and the transmissions were also the same. So you will be able to run the turbo clutch in the naturally aspirated transmission because they are the same part. Zoom-Zoom.)

  5. Why suggested turbo kits professional install only?

I have seen many pictures of the full turbo kits, and to tell you the truth it doesn't look complicated..Lots of removing of old stuff, connecting new, tightening, bolting, etc... Why is it recommended professional install only? I mean check out this turbo kit, not for the brand (whatever it is), but the picture..http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4-TURBO-KIT-MAZDA-PROTEGE-5-99-00-01-02-03-04-MIATA_W0QQitemZ220501156083QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3356e4a0f3 I've replaced headers, spark plugs, intakes, lights, and the basic internal stuff like sound systems, subs etc. Does this seem still like something i should leave to a professional? I mean would it take days to connect or is this a less than a day thing

ANSWER: (Ah...the eternal question. Yep...most of the actually installation is not so bad...probably the most dangerous thing is swapping the fuel injectors. But...when you add boost to an engine you need to alter the tune on the car's pcm, most kits don't come with a programmer to do this because most people can't do this (you also need a wideband a/f unit and a dyno). Because of altitude, tunes in one area will not be good in another area (some companies give general tunes but they'll always be somewhat richer than they should be). If you do it yourself and the tune causes a significant lean condition you'll do excessive damage to your engine. Hence the need for professional installation.)

  6. Turbo Kit for a Mazda3 2.3 2006 HB?

I want to put a turdo kit in my mazda 3 hb 2006 2.3 but i want some help on what kind to put in it and where to get it so save some money hit me up with prices and the different models. I dont know alot about engines so help me out. Here are some pics of the carhttp://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=56986545&albumId=2760852Yes they did make a standard non turbo Mazda3 2.3L HB in 2006 bc I have one

ANSWER: (They didnt do a standard 2.3 in the mazda 3 in 2006, only the MPS which was a 2.3 dz unit with turbo knocking out 260ps)

  7. I don't know much about cars, so what can I do?

I'm getting a 91 Mazda 626 (I don't know the trim but i'm pretty sure it's not turbo charged) and I want to "soop it up" a bit but can't find any Turbo Kits or Cold Air Intakes for this car. So my questions are do these things exist for this model, and where can I find them? (and) If not what can I do (besides performance muffler)? I was thinking I could find the turbo charged version and swap some parts out but I don't know if cars work that way. I also saw something called a "Blow Off Valve" but it seems to me this things for a turbo charged engines. So what can I do? Please help

ANSWER: (You really need to spend a lot of time educating yourself before you sink a bunch of money into modifying, and possibly messing up, your Mazda. First of all, do what I did, and take an introductory auto shop class at your local community college. You'll be glad you did. Regarding your 626: Cold air intakes are a fairly simple install, but unless there's a shroud included that isolates your air cleaner from the rest of the engined compartment, your cold air intake might wind-up feeding hotter air to the engine than the stock setup. Retrofitting a turbocharger to a non-turbo car, on the other hand, would NOT be a simple install. There are an awful lot of parts and plumbing to sort out, including things like the engine management computer, mas air-flow sensor, and on and on and on. Furthermore, if the resulting setup does not include all of the drivetrain equipment and accessories that would have been found on a stock 626 Turbo (including air conditioning, smog equipment, and etc.), it may not be legal in your state, and won't pass a smog check. What would I do if I had your car? First of all, I'd make sure it was properly tuned up with new spark plugs and wires, a fresh oil change, and a K&N air filter, just so I'd be getting the most out of it in its stock configuration. Next I might have a professional mechanic install an MSD or Jacob Electronics ignition kit/computer, but I'd make darned sure it was a mechanic who was interested in the project and willing to take the time to fine-tune the setup for maximum performance. Then maybe I'd go with a brand new, high performance catalytic converter (the one that's on the car is surely due for a replacement if it's the original one), along with a smog-legal, cat-back exhaust. Note that I would NOT go with an insanely wide diameter for the exhaust pipe or muffler, as doing so would only hurt the torque output. The result of all this would be car that's every bit as reliable as a stock 626, but that runs much smoother, gets better fuel economy, and has a little more pep.)

  8. I have a 2006 Mazda 6 4 cyl. 2.3 Turbocharge?

I use the tecktonrix shifter or whatever its called, the one without a clutch. I was thinking of getting a CAI and then maybe exhaust but i had another question. What are the opinions out there on turbo charging. Would my engine be able to handle the pressure and power? Does a turbo kit come with things like a CAI or would having one be arbitrary if i got a turbo? How much would a turbo cost for the install? Obviously i need someone who has alot of experience and is intelligent, if you feel like helping someone out, respond, if you feel like being rude, dont waste your time.i already have a turbo kit in mind

ANSWER: (you could technically have CAI with a boosted car but CAI is mostly put in if you dont have boost. the parts and labor install of the turbo can be anywhere from 2-5k dollars depending on parts that you buy and where you take it to get it installed. if you dont have any knowledge of cars then take it to a shop to get an estimate that will help you decide on what you want to do to your car.)

  9. What Kind of Mazda 3 Turbo Kit?

I want to put a turdo kit in my mazda 3 hb 2006 2.3 but i want some help on what kind to put in it and where to get it so save some money hit me up with prices and the different models Here are some pics of the carhttp://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=56986545&albumId=2760852

ANSWER: (I would suggest tri-point engineering turbo kit or corksport. If you don't have the money to do it right, don't do it. Whatever compromises built into the project will cost you sooner than later in the service life of the car. Perhaps, a piece of friendly advice, whatever parts you choose will be subject to extreme heat and stress. Therefore, the best your money can buy is the only solution without a headache. To answer your question directly, purchasing parts over the internet is ususally cheaper. The reason being, no taxes, for now. You have to figure shipping but it still comes out cheaper most of the time. Best.)

  10. mazda 3 perf. part list + website help?

  11. Turbo Suggestions for Miata 1990.?

I've been looking at a bunch of turbochargers, from BEGi S1-S5 turbo systems, TSI T25 Turbos, Greddy turbos, Voodoo kits, and a bunch more. Well anyone suggest which of these they would go with, cancel out the Turbo Specialties T25 turbo kit because I heard they are junk. But I need help because I like all but really don't know which one to get. I just need to know which turbo kits will get me up to 170+HP on a stock 1990 Mazda Miata. Will get other modifications after I can find my right turbo kit =). My goal is 200+WHP as well.

ANSWER: (DUDE! why would u suggest a mustang to a guy who has a miata!!!!!!that guy musta lost his mind! shure its only 3100 lbs but um.. hello did he know that the miata is only, u know 1000 lbs less!!!!!anyways i would deffinatly go for the begi kit, there stuff looks really well made and ive sen it featured in a couple of miata mags over the years.id go with a s2 or 23. depends on what ur plans are.. good luck and have fun!)

  12. Turbo suggestions for 1990-94 Miata?

Well just wondering, I really want to buy a Mazda Miata 1990-94 NA model. And umm, i'm not really good with engine performances and all those tune ups with cars. But I really want to install some type of Turbocharger for this car. any suggestions? My expectations for this car is a somewhat type of speedster, fast roadster, a little bit of racing, or drifting, somewhat in the budget of $2000???. Not sure with turbo kit prices. Well if anyone has any suggestions on what turbo kits are great that meet my expectations and budget then I would love to hear your answer. If you need to know anything else please let me know what it is and I can extend my question or answer.

ANSWER: (There is a lot of on line info out there on turbo charging the Miata. One of which is mataturbo.net (see link). There is no doubt that a kit would be easier (and in the long run cheaper) then a bunch of parts bought off of e-bay. Try Flying Miata. You can down load the instructions for installation and see how hard it is to install.Take it for what it is worth, a turbo charger never helped an engine to last longer. A fresh engine is almost a must, as any weak spot in the power train will be found when one is added. So think about an engine over haul, and make sure to have a spare tranny and differential on hand to replace the ones you have. Right now I am kind of on a holding pattern on my set up, as the transmission has a few noises in it and when I put the used crank shaft in, I saw what I think is a forging burst on the used replacement. Not a good thing. It is cheaper to rebuild a block before the pieces come out the side of the block then after wards.)

  13. can i get a turbo kit for my car?

    Mazda protege dx 1992

ANSWER: (you can get a turbo kit for most any car. The question is, is it worth the expense. Keep in mind that your engine wasn't designed for one. So if your going to boost more than about 4 pounds then you are going to have to rebuild the engine to handle the pressure. If you want a cheap turbo, go to a junk yard and get a turbo set up off a wrecked car. A car that has about the same size engine you have. Study a little of how they work. Put your own together and save a bunch of money. You will also have to do work on the cars computer. the computer will have to adjust the engine to compensate for the turbo.if you just need power once in a while. Consider a Nitrous system.Dry system for power from start and wet for power at upper rpm ranges.cost less and won't mess with your emissions.)

  14. Is Pre-tuned Turbo Safe ?

Im wondering if it would be safe to install my Esmeril Turbo Kit on my mazda rx8 and run the pre-tuned map from esmeril on my interceptor-x ems for the 500mile break in period at the recommended 2psi untill fully broken in which is when I will get it dyno tuned. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

ANSWER: (Yup! Its pretty much is safe.)

  15. Should i buy this 1989 mazda RX7 ? (info and picture)?

So im debating on if yes or no should i buy this 1989 Mazda RX7 not turbo, no rust, 1.5'' drop kit, new coils, new struts, the rotary motor was completly rebuilt, 15in mags, better brake calibers, newer transmision, extra doors, extra hood, windshild, back window, interior parts and another motor (needs to be rebuilt). He also mentions that the Fuel pump needs to be changed, and that he includes a fuel pump and that i ''Only need to loosen 4screws'' to fix it. So my question is, should i buy it? its 1000$. Any help strongly thankfull, and if you know aloth about this rx7 year/model, i might have more questions for you, you can email me at tripo_kitty141@hotmail.com or if you want more info. THANKS! http://img193.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=2860ben20.jpg

ANSWER: (Hmm, that's definitely not an 89. It's an S4, so it's 86-88. But I think you should go for it if it's only a grand. Hopefully the mileage is pretty low- n/a rotaries generally don't go past 200K before they need a rebuild. That's not always the case- I've got an 87 that's the same package as yours and it's got 267K on the stock build now. As for the fuel pump, you have to lift up the rear carpet, remove the side carpet on the drivers side shock tower, disconnect the connector under that, un-screw the 4 screws on the left access panel for the fuel pump (aluminum plate- to the right of the jack), pop that black circle rubber piece through the aluminum cover, disconnect the 2 fuel lines, un-screw the 8? screws that hold the pump assembly to the fuel tank, and lift the assembly from the tank. From there it's easy to swap the pumps. Here's a website about buying a non-turbo rotary:http://aaroncake.net/RX-7/buy1.htm If you do buy the car- go ahead and join www.rx7club.com. You can read read read and find out tons of things about these cars. For kicks- here's my car. It was in much worse shape than yours when I bought it... http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c315/Pimpdaddy7835/ And if you want any more info you can't find on rx7club, you can email me at brettlinton7@gmail.com. Good luck!)

  16. mazda rx 8 2007??????????

ANSWER: (How much additional horse power is related to how much boost! If you want to beat the mustangs, think about a Super charger.Keep in mind that the RX8 is not a drag racer, to treat it as such will shorten its life.I have included a link to the installation instructions by the way so that you can see what you are getting yourself into.)

  17. TURBO KIT TO USE ON AN 08 MAZDA 3?

Just Bought 2.0 16v DOHC Mazda 3. Adding the Turbo is next and there are some options, any heads up on types, specs, of those options would be app. No bull@#$%ers pls only those who have the car or the knowledge.

ANSWER: (Alright, here's some no BS. You need more than just a "kit". Turbo, intercooler, piping, oil lines, coolant lines, upgraded fuel injectors, air fuel management of sometype, boost control, upgraded rods and pistons to handle the compression ratio, possibly an engine management system, bypass valve, custom exhaust.... And on, and on, and on. Sure hope you've got about $6,000+ to spend on this. Sure, you can do it cheaper. And you'll blow your car up, because you used cheap parts. And I hope you don't mind that you'll still have a slow car at the end of all this.)

  18. which turbo (stage 1-5) should i put in my 1986 mazda rx7?

It's a non-turbo, but I want it to be faster. I just don't want to get the wrong turbo kit and waste that money. Any advice on the turbo or any other modifications I could make will be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: (It all depends on the current condition of the motor. For one if it is N/A then you will have a ton of mods to do to the car. If you are using it for a full race application then you could take all of the emissions off the car and that will make the whole process a lot easier. Otherwise you would be better off finding a Turbo II engine and swapping it. Or you will be looking at pulling the engine, rebuilding it with some new 'guts', opening up the intake and exhaust ports, putting in a whole new fuel system to support the psi you want to run, I don't think the stock N/A ECU will support a turbo. www.pocketlogger.com has really good ECU upgrades for rx7s. The transmission for a turbo II has different gear ratios but I doubt that will make a whole lot of difference. The biggest problem you will have is with the emissions. If you take that stuff off then you might be able to slap the turbo on with a new fuel system and ECU and be okay... but illegal on the street!! Your call.)

  19. can i use a mazda turbo kit on a focus?

i have a 2007 ford focus my buddie wrecked his 2006 mazda 3 it has a turbo kit on it can i use it on my car or is that not interchangeable

ANSWER: (usually its not. You have to see if the piping fits your car, and if the headers fit the same, the spacing between headers is the main point, you can use the turbo though, just the turbo, not the piping, I guess the innercooler too, but the piping and exhaust and headers will have to be custom made. ♥hєαthєrlчnnє♥™)

  20. What is the newest year of the Mazda RX7?

Hi I want to know what the newest yearof the mazda RX7 is because i heard that it is a great car to toon up. I plan on putting body kits on and putting turbos in if they dont come with it so please tell me which Mazda RX7 would be the best year and type to but. All feedback appreciate thanks. : )

ANSWER: (They stopped importing to the US in 1995 but Mazda cut production of the RX7 in 2002. You may be able to find one after 95 but not cheap. RX-7's from 92-95 hold a good value. A 95 that runs well and looks decent will cost around $11,000 minimum. The last generation is also one of the coolest looking cars out there. They are amazing cars and are totally worth it though.)

  21. How much more HP can a turbo kit normally give you your car?

how much more HP can a Turbo Kit Give a car for example a Ford Probe SE OR MAZDA Mx6 16v OR 24V Cars

ANSWER: (It is faily easy to answer. Atmosheric pressure at sea level is about 14.7 psi. So if you boost 5psi the motor thinks it is 33% bigger and add 33% more Hp. Add 15psi you get 100% more Hp. This is with suffence fuel and no other changes. Add a cam shaft and heads and turbo you will get the cam and heads Hp added to base line then add boost increase.)

  22. where can I buy a turbo kit for a 2000 mazda 626?

ANSWER: (did you have 5k for the turbo kit, racing ecu and installation? you can find the parts you need in ebay)

  23. What Do You Think About The Mazda RX-8?

Im thinking about getting the RX-8 this summer, but the only thing that bothers me is the 232 horsepower. I like the RX-8 for its body style thats just about it. I dont wanna be on the interstate and a mustang cruises by me for a race and i get burnt. Should I get the RX-8 and put a $4,995.00 esmeril Turbo Kit in it(414hp) or should i just start looking for a new better car or should i wait for a newer hopefully better RX-8 to come out?

ANSWER: (Jay, If I can take the liberty to read between the lines, I think I get the gist of your question. Your question is rooted in trying to get a grasp on power to weight ratio, or how does a smaller high performance engine stack up against a robust high powered V8. Lastly, you don't want to get embarrassed on the road. As you go through life you will learn to pick your battles. Not to many people would want to push up against a 400 horsepower engine with dual exhaust, for the sake of this discussion. Everyone that wants to race should not be raced, or sparred with, even if they rev their engine at a stop light, roll their window down and look at you over through dark Oakleys. If you race, run a race that gives you the best chance to compete. The myth that big horsepower allows a driver to point the car and shoot the gap and win every race is simply not true. This type of thinking does not take into consideration curves, undulations that require a squat suspension to manage road and track irregularities. My point here is that big horsepower has it's limitations too. I cannot possibly give you a succinct answer to adequately address what I believe you may be getting at, however, google "colin chapman & lotus elise philosophy," likewise, google" mazda philosophy, kansei engineering" and lastly google "power to weight ratio concept." If you are willing to dig a little deeper you will find a better understanding of what I believe you would like to know about the Rx8. What I want to leave you with is this. In the mid 90's I drove a Oldsmobile Aurora, it came with a 250 horsepower Northstar V8 engine. The 0-60 time was a best in class 8.5 seconds. I now drive a Mazda 3 with a few power upgrades, lighter rims, wider tires, it's customized in every way minus a turbocharger. The Mazda can perform 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. A full second faster than the 1995 Northstar V8 engine. My 05 Mazda has a low compression naturally aspirated 160 horsepower engine, as a result of modifications it stands at 175 hp. The difference between the Aurora and Mazda is 60-90 hp as well as 4 additional pistons. One can assume that 175 hp is not a lot of power, but the Mazda carries a weight of 2,756 pounds, compared to a 250 hp V8 that has to lug around just over 4,000 pounds.I don't need to race a 400 horsepower V8, but in the right circumstances he too could be humiliated with my little 4 cylinder. Cheers.)

  24. Question on Mazda 6..?

Can I put a turbo kit on an automatic 4 cyl. mazda 6 without having to do more specs. Or messing up the engine??

ANSWER: (yes you canmessing with the engine? of course you will mess with the engine you are about putting more air in the cylinders but i know what you are talking about, you can run a turbo without changing pistons but with a limited boost also make sure once you find the turbo kit also get the ecu because stock ecu will not make the engine work with a turbo setting)

  25. Possible to supercharge/Turbo a 2.5L JDM KLZE? (96' Mazda MX3)?

  26. Mazda Rx8 Starting Mods.?

I just bought a used 2006 Rx8 6 speed AUTO.i didn't get the manual for a couple of reasons but thats not the point. I was wondering what mods i could start off with right now riding fully stock performance becuase i want to increase the performance and keep the exterior stock. a turbo kit is too much right now. Limit around 1.5k. I was thinking a AEM cold intake, and a greddy sp2 exahust. but i also heard that's a waste because only adds a little hp gain. please gimme so advice.

ANSWER: (I see you've done your research. Yes, Mazda made very efficient intakes and exhausts for their RX8's. Dyno tests have proven that aftermarket intakes and exhausts for the RX8 generally give you about 3 to 5 HP increases each. Probably the best bang for your buck is the Cobb Accessport Flash Tuner. "Chips" are useless for this car, instead just reflash the PCM/ECU with better maps. See here: http://cobbtuning.com/products/?id=3812 A good shop to buy this at is: http://www.mazdamaniac.com/cobb/accessport.htm He will make up safe maps for you if you buy from him.)

  27. Turbo off of ebay? (mechanic please answer)?

so i want a turbo for my 01 mazda protege mp3. good idea?i'm not rich so i went to ebay and searched turbo kit mazda protegethere are some coming up from a guy names jlovetdrifting or something like that and they are for about $700, is that a good price? and how much do you think it would be to have installed (rough estimate will do) please answer any of these questionsokay, so how much would it cost for a turbo kit (from a good brand name) to be installed? is it worth doing to a mazda protege mp3

ANSWER: (There is no provision for what is called O2 clamping or any other compensation mechanisms to interface with the ECM.There are no injectors provided. Larger injectors are needed in most cases. The BOV opens to the atmosphere. It should be plumbed back in to the intake down stream of the MAF.The turbo is oil cooled only and most likely a product from China. It will need to be replaced in short order. I like MHI turbos because they are both water and oil cooled. There is no exhaust header or down pipe. The price seems nice, but you are still looking at parts to make it work that may cost you another 500 us dollars or more.Find a more complete kit. Like the one in the link. Notice how they claim a 7 PSI boost. This is with in the range of your injectors. If you want to read about the problems you are getting into look at the second link.If you want to see what is required for installation, go to flyingmiata.com and down load the instructions for the Miata. Which has a similiar engine (with a different lay out - RWD instead of FWD).)
