Subaru Turbo Kit FAQ

Where should I get a turbo kit and supplies to make my 1995 Subaru Impreza 2.2 liter engine, a turbo?
ANSWER: (Depends on your budget and how long you want the car to last. For about $4000, AVO makes a full kit with everything you need to turbo charge your car. But you will have to run very low boost, like barely noticeable, or your engine will not last long. The best and most reliable way may not be cheap, but find a donor WRX or STI and swap everything over. Bottom line is your engine is a lot weaker than the WRX/STI engines and is not made to be turbo charges.)

Subaru WRX STI 2007 or 2004?
Im interested in buying a subaru wrx sti and im decided between an 07 and an 04. I'm intending to race it, too. The 07 is $26,995 and has 24,006 miles and is stock. the 04 is $25,990 with 47,697 miles on it and also has a GT37R Turbo Kit andTurbo XS Front Mount Intercooler. Im wondering which one is the better buy, and if the 07 is, is the extra grand worth it?Can you also explain the reasons why you think which is better?
ANSWER: (I would go with the 07. It is stock, 3 years newer, 1/2 the mileage. Either way please call your insurance co first. They are steep to insure.)

Can I install a Turbo Kit on my 2006 Subaru Impreza Non-Turbo?
I have a Turbo kit over ebay.org, and I want to know if it can be installed on my Non-Turbo Impreza 2.0 Type R Engine 5 Speed Manual.. Will my engine+Gearbox handle the new HP added? do I need a new computer chip for my Impreza?
ANSWER: (Yes, you can do it. But I don't recommend it unless you have a good source of income, or a lot of money saved up specifically for this because it will not be cheap by any means. Also, your engine internals are not the same as that of the WRX and STI, which are made to power a turbo, so this means that you will not be able to run nearly the same amount of boost (around 6psi would be a "safer" amount), and it will not necessarily be very reliable. You would also need something to allow you to tune your car, something like an accessport, or ecutek. Nothing is more important then your tune, especially since your putting a turbo on a n/a car. I would think this over vigurously, and do a lot of research on it, because I would be prepared to spend upwards of 6k for this job. You might just want to sell your car and use the 6k to invest in a WRX or STI. Because no matter what you do, your car with a turbo added will never be able to push nearly as much boost, make nearly as much hp/tq, or be nearly as reliable as a car that was built to power a turbo. Also, please do not buy an ebay turbo kit if you are gonna do this job, you mine as well just donate all that money to charity if your gonna put that ticking time bomb in your car.)

Any Ideas on Increasing My WRX STi Horsepower?
Hey, I'm looking for some way to increase my 2010 Subaru WRX STi's horsepower. Recently, I installed a AEM cold air intakes. What else i must add/change? Is there any good twin turbo kit for Impreza? How do i swap my ECU chip? Please suggest some brands and/or some way to increase its power!
ANSWER: (Ok, you have a plethora of issues. First, slow down and learn to drive the car properly. That car isn't slow by any stretch of the imagination, but you do have to know how to drive it to extract the maximum potential. Your cold air intake requires the computer be retuned for it, so you're probably losing power right now with that intake installed without a reflash. Second, your impreza is a 4 cylinder. A twin turbo would be pointless because it would just take up more space, add more plumbing and more points of failure. And besides, they do just fine with 1 turbo. Also, your ECU doesn't have a "chip" in it, it's a flashable EEPROM. That means you plug in a tuner and adjust the parameters that way, not by plugging in a chip. Your best bet, once you learn to drive the car, is to go to fastwrx.com and look at their modification path suggestions. It really is the best way to go.)

SUBIS~ IM TRYING 2 DECIDE ON A PROJECT CAR. CAN I PUT A ROLL CAGE ON A WAGON SUBARU STI AND STILL FIT MY FAM?
IM LOOKING FOR A FAMILY CAR / A PROJECT CAR. I ORIGINALLY WANTED A NISSAN 240 BUT IM NOT GONNA BE ABLE TO AFFORD BOTH PLUS MY KID WOUNT FIT WITH ALL THAT COME WITH HAVING ONE. SO IM LOOKING INTO A SUBARU WAGON STI 2000-05 A WANT TO KNW IF THERES A SIMPLE ROLL CAGE I CAN HAVE INSTALLED WITHOUT HAVING TUBES TAKING MY CARGO OR SEATING SPACE. JUST A LIL SOMETHING FOR ADDED SAFETY. MY PLANS FOR THE CAR IS A MILDLY MODDED STI FOR DAILY DRIVING. (COIL OVERS. INTAKE. HEADERS. EXHAUST, RIMS. BODY KIT IF POSSIBLE $$$. MAYBEEE TURBO. COUPLE TVS.) OR should i just get me a family vehicle and get a Non-Op. fron the DMV on a 240 and just work on it on the side?
ANSWER: (Well they didn't make a hatchback STI until 2008, so with the years you are looking at, it would be a sedan. With that said, a roll cage is not necessary unless if you plan on tracking your car quite a bit. And with how you described what you are looking for, it doesn't sound like you will be. It would also make your car more unsafe for your passengers. Regardless, the STI would be fine as a family car, and great as a project car. If I were you, I would use your money for the other things you listed. Plus a roll cage would take up room in your car, and would just make it more difficult to get into and out of. And if your gonna be driving your family all over the place, that could be a real inconvenience. I would however still go for the STI, their just such great cars no matter what you use them for.)

Are there any after market performance parts for a 2010 four cylinder Subaru Outback?
I literally have own this 2010 Outback for less than 30hrs. Unfortunately in California there is no "cooling off period" so I can't return it for the six cylinder. Needless to say I'm now realizing this new car is way too powerless for me and since I'm stuck with this, I was wondering if there are any reliable turbo or supercharge kits for this thing? Thanks!
ANSWER: (If you wanted a performance car, you should have bought a performance car. Subaru makes some gnarly little AWD pocket rockets. However, now that you're here, try this: Take it back RIGHT NOW, and tell them you want the more expensive turbocharged four cylinder (better than the six; more HP and more torque). Since they'll get more money out of you for that, they might swing something. Be prepared, however, to pay a price. The Outback you've bought is now a used car. Hey, if you can find a friend to walk in with you and buy it, knowing the situation, perhaps it won't cost you too much. And, just so you know, while that Outback isn't a racer, it's a great car. My wife has a 2008 and we love it. I have a 1997 I bought new and love it. Oh, my icon? That's me in my 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S (444 HP) ... just racing in the rain.)

how much boost can a stock subaru 2.0 NA EJ204 take?
how much boost can a stock subaru 2.0 NA EJ204 take? assuming no internal changes...just bolt on a turbo kit
ANSWER: (Not much at all. Its almost not even worth the time and money. You can go out and buy an 02 WRX engine, which would be able to hold tons more boost, for not that much more. Not to mention it would be a lot more reliable. Probably around 7 or 8 psi would be in the safer range, and I personally would be nervous to run any more. The internals on the NA were not meant to hold boost for a turbo, so i would think hard about your options before you do anything.)

i have a 2005 subaru 2.5rs. what all do i need to put a basic turbo kit on?
please help me i want to turbo it but im not sure of what all i neeed
ANSWER: (It really depends on how much power you are looking for and how reliable you want the car to be. Your engine is quite different than the factory turbocharged engines. You have weaker pistons with higher compression which is not ideal for boosting. Also the softer aluminium heads can become a weak point. Even a quality bolt on kit like the AVO unit can make the engine a ticking time bomb. And for the $4000 price tag, the power gains barely put you at stock WRX level. If you want to push more boost for more power, you will at the very least change the pistons but even then, because of the heads, you will be limited. Basically, the RS is just not the ideal candidate for turbocharging. That's why most people go with a swap. A basic WRX swap will run you about $5000 but for the extra money, you get a much more reliable starting point with endless potential for more power. Personally, I would save the money and keep saving to trade the car in for a WRX if you really want a turbo.)

what are little ends on a subaru impreza wrx sti 2.0ltr turbo awd?
we had head work done £255,head gasket set £390,cambelt kit £262,camshaft sprockets £536,,,,do these prices sound about right,,,,,now say little ends have gone,,,,please explain
ANSWER: (little end, commonly known as small ends which is where the gudjin pin slides into and holds the con-rod and the piston together. this is located in the con-rod itself. when it wears there will be piston slap noise. the con-rod has two sides, this big end and a small end.hope this helps.)

Putting a turbo in a 1998 Subaru Impreza?
I want to install a turbo kit in my 1998 Subaru Impreza it's manual 5spd. with 101k miles on the engine what are somethings I should do first to the engine before I install a turbo? What is the difficulty level of this project?
ANSWER: (i don't know much about impreza engines, but most of the time when adding a turbo onto a naturaly aspirated engine, you'd have to get better pistons, connecting rods and etc because sometimes stock parts aren't built to handle a boost and they will malfunction prematurely. now some cars have really strong engines like the miata or supra, but impreza i have no clue. maybe check out a subaru impreza forum where people might've already did what your thinking about doing. just go on google and type "impreza forum" good luck.)

Is this all I need to add this turbo to my car?
The kit is for a 98 subaru impreza http://www.avoturboworld.com/avoshop/product_info.php?cPath=267_197_198&products_id=100 It comes with # AVO Garrett water-cooled ball-bearing turbo# AVO high-flow bar-and plate top mount intercooler w/integrated 5th Fuel Injector# AVO Stainless steel up-pipe# Stainless steel downpipe with a sport high flow catalytic converter# Pre-programmed engine management with extra injector.# Stainless braided oil lines# AVO Power air filter# AVO BOV for the RS Turbo Kit# AVO intake pipe# High quality hoses & Fittings# Full fitting instructions
ANSWER: (You will need bigger fuel injectors and a bigger fuel pump to feed the larger injectors. You will also need to rebuild your motor because putting a turbocharger on a car that old that probably has over 100k miles will cause it to blow rather quickly not to mention that the transmission and clutch may not be able to handle the added power either.)

What turbo will fit my 08 Subaru Impreza 2.5i? [Stock appilication turbo] 10pts!?
Car: 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i (NOT WRX/STI)Mods: none, so far AVO DOES NOT make the turbo kit for the 2.5i anymore (specifically designed for this car). (They don't have it on there 2010 catalog). I'm saving up to buy it in 2-3 years. Will they make it again? Should i buy it used? If so, where? If not, what other turbo's will fit my car without damaging it? Thanks!I'm okay if i get low boost like 4 or 5psi. I just want a turbo. Thanks again! Happy Xmas!
ANSWER: (You can make just about any turbo fit with custom piping. As far as running it without damaging your car, that's not going to happen unless you build the motor or run very low boost. Just keep saving for a swap. Even with a built motor, the soft aluminium heads will not allow you to run any high crazy boost.)

turbo charger information please help!!! subaru turbocharger?
Ok i recently acquired a TD04L subaru turbocharger from a forester. It need rebuilt. But the typical rebuild kit doesn't have everything i need. What i cant find is the center shaft and the compressor wheels. Does anyone know where these can be located without going to subaru? any help would be greatly appreciated.
ANSWER: (That is not a typical rebuild. What you have done is pretty much bought a "parts" turbo, meaning it would actually cost more to repair than to just go and buy a good turbo.)
-
Subaru WRX turbo upgrade?
I don't own one so don't call me a noob but when upgrading a turbo from stock to aftermarket, do you need to buy a whole new turbo kit, or just the turbo?
ANSWER: (Depending on the year of the car and size of the turbo, the amount of things you need will vary. Say you want to upgrade an 06 WRX turbo to a 16G or a VF22. Well all you really "need" is the turbo, an aftermarket down pipe and engine management for tuning. Now you will not get anywhere near the full capability of the turbo with that set up. But it can work. Do the same on an 02 and you will have to add a fuel pump and injectors to the list. But I think you are asking if there are kits like for Honda's but not really. There are a lot of turbo's made that are a direct replacement of the stock unit so no real kit to speak of. You just need some other supporting mods to take full advantage of an upgrade.)

99 Subaru Forester axle back exhaust?
I was wondering if anyone knows if there is an axle back exhaust kit available for may car. I have not been able to find anything. It is not the turbo model.
ANSWER: (Well im sure there is as i had purchased a blitz nur spec one along time ago. And it was an axle back. But check ebay thats of course a popular one lol, i know srs should sell you one just have to ask but most the time check subaru forums, if they are parting exahust system some of the muffler section will bolt right up to stock location , but there are somethat dont. Just gotta look around and search different words. and my signiture line check nasioc.com iwsti.com wrxtunners.com etc. those are just some subaru forums lol.)

Where could I find a turbo kit for a `95 Subaru Impreza?
It's a 1995 Impreza with a 1.8L boxer 4 engine.. I've looked around on a few sites [turbonetics, HKS,..] but I mainly all I could find were the WRX/STI Imprezas >___< Could a turbo kit for one of them fit my '95 Impreza...?
ANSWER: (You can't find any because your engine can't handle much if any boost. You need to build the motor first then you can pretty much use a kit made for the WRX with some modification and fabrication. That's really your only option other than a swap.)
-
does anyone make a turbo kit or turbo manifold for a 1999 subaru impreza outback with a 2.2l engine?
ANSWER: (There are kits to turbocharge it. However, you should remember that the engine was not designed for boost internally, so dont go more than say 5 pounds of boost. A different version of the 2.2L used in the legacy was turbocharged. That version is designed for turbocharging, and turbocharging it with a bigger turbo isnt as much of a problem, as internally the 2.2L turbo was designed for turbo boost, where the 2.2L non turbo was not designed for boost. So go ahead and put a turbo on it, just dont go crazy on the boost.)

ANSWER: (First, that turbo kit isn't for that model of vehicle. So that won't work anyway. Secondly, you can buy a WRX STI of a few years old, for less, and it will look better, and perform better. But if you feel like pissing your money away...go for it.)

Help with AVO turbo kit for '04 Subaru Impreza RS?
Hey,I'm from Canada and I recently had an AVO turbo kit installed in my '04 Subaru Impreza RS, but the intercooler is too large and won't fit. The company said that this may be due to a difference in the Canadian model from the US model. Has anyone heard anything about this problem? Any info or advice would be appreciated! Until this gets fixed I'm without a car! Thanks!
ANSWER: (There is no physical difference between cars sold in Canada and those sold in the USA. Subaru builds cars for North America. Yes, there are differences between European and North American versions. I believe AVO is lying to you and not admitting their mistake.)

does anyone know where to find a cheap and reliable turbo kit?
or how to make one for cheap for a 1999 subaru legacy GT? i want to turbo my car BADLY but i can't find an actual kit for it. i can find the forged pistons and connecting rods and that kind of stuff though, just not the turbo kit.
ANSWER: (engine swap is expensive. turbo installation will be also very costly, including shop time and if you have to use a generic/universal turbine and custom fabrication of the plumbing/piping count on all in $5000-7000 if forced induction is out of the budget, and if you can build out the engine (bottom end & heads - you have one other option, that is very reasonable price - nitrous kit.nitrous oxide can provide the same degree of power enhancement as forced induction and it causes NO greater strain or heat generation than does a turbo or supercharger (at equivalent power levels)http://www.andysautosport.com/subaru/1995_1999_legacy/performance/nitrous_oxide/ Anyway do some research on nitrous, lots of installations around and it is a popular addition and a worthwhile one if the engine is properly prepared. regards)

2005 Subaru Legacy GT turbo kits?
lookin for a turbo ugrade for an 05 Legacy GT, anyone find one? or is it possible to use like an STi turbo? or are the LGT turbo and STi turbo the same? any help would be appreciatedthanks that helps a ton. what kind of upgrades can i get to maximize the stock turbo? i'm looking to upgrade the whp to aroud 350-400. so about 100-150 over what it comes stock. any ideas?
ANSWER: (Your Legacy has a little different set up then the STI or 07 and older WRX's. The only upgrades I know of are either an 18G modification from Mach V or AVO bolt on turbos that Rallitek sells. You can use STI compatible turbos only if you change your intake manifold and inter cooler too. What kind of power are you looking for? Hvae you done everything to maximize your stock turbo? With some bolt ons and tuning, you can have more power than an STI pretty easily. Chrck out LegacyGT.com for good info on your car.)

Whats differnce between sti and wrx subaru? ?
what would be quicker / faster / better handling ? a subaru 2002 wrx with pro drive kit?or a sti legacy 2.0 turbo ?
ANSWER: (STI means Subaru Tecnica International It's just a performance package for a WRX. So, an STI WRX, will outperform a normal one. What difference does it make which is faster, if you don't even realize that they're talking about the same car?)

subaru sti question!! 10 points!! helpp please!!?
ok the question is : just an example let's say i put a gt35 turbo kit with fmic set up ,magnus intake, aquamist. etc.. and it goes to 625 HP in a cosworth long block.. and i dont know if i put the same mods to a sti engine it will make the same HP or what???
ANSWER: (The Cosworth long block has a few differences that will allow it to make more power than the stock STI motor. For one the internals are much stronger. From the crank out to the pistons are much stronger than the STI internals so it can handle a little more boost. That's why they cost $9000. Also the heads flow better and they have better valve train and cams so it will help it make more power. So to answer your question, not really. You might be able to get similar power but the built block will last longer at those power levels. I personally think the 35r is too big for the stock block for this very reason. Why put a big turbo on the stock block if you are not going to get anywhere near it's potential. A 30r would be better if you have no plans for a built block. I really like the Blouch Dominator 3 for a stock motor STI. It's a ball bearing, stock location 30r basically and has excellent spool and makes a good solid 400 to the wheels on pump gas with proper supporting mods. Just know that you have to pay to play so a block build should be something you are prepared for when upgrading to any turbo really.)

What is the difference between this 2 turbo kits?!! 10 points subaru sti !!?
what is the difference if a put one of these turbo kit in a subaru impreza wrx sti 2005 ( STOCK) 1) perrin kit gt3071 2) perrin kit gt3076 you think that the 3076 is to much for a stock sti? and it says that you have to buy the intercooler the fuel rails and more you have to buy that to put the turbo kit of to the limit?
ANSWER: (I do believe the items they list below the first paragraph on this site is all the mods you will need to run your turbo unit properly. But i would recommend if your gonna install it, to get all the parts listed and check if there are any forums dealing with your car and see if they have experience with putting on turbo units.)

what is the difference between this 2 turbo kits?!! 10 poins subaru sti !!?
what is the difference if a put one of these turbo kit in a subaru impreza wrx sti 2005 ( STOCK) 1) perrin kit gt3071 2) perrin kit gt3076 you think that the 3076 is to much for a stock sti? and it says that you have to buy the intercooler the fuel rails and more you have to buy that to put the turbo kit of to the limit?
ANSWER: (The 3076 is a slightly better flowing turbo and on pump gas, it will make another 20-30 hp but with a few hundred more RPM's of lag. Your decision between the two gets difficult depending on what gas you will be using. On pump gas, the 3071 may only make a little more power than a good 20G for a lot more money. Between the 3071 and the 3076, on pump gas, I would go with the 3076 just because if you are spending the money i would want the extra power and the extra lag is minimal. Many people run the 3076 on a stock block without problem. Just ask for a conservative tune and you should be able to run low 12's or even high 11's if you are a good driver. I would add a few 10th's if you go with the 3071. Engine reliability on any turbo we'll depend on the tune. Just make sure you are tuned by a reputable tuner and it should be fine. I will say this though. If you are in a position where if the motor blows and you can't afford to have it rebuilt, you can't afford to be modding at this level so if that is the case, a 20G with simple supporting mods will run much cheaper and be easier on the motor. One more thing. I'm not trying to be a dick cuz I like answering questions here but you have been asking about different kits for months now and I really think calling Perrin is a good idea. Geoff and the guy's there are really cool and will gladly answer anything you want to know. I live 5 minutes from their new shop and like to stop in ther to hang out and they never mind it so give tham a call.)

ok the thing is i have a stock sti so i wanted to tuned it so i came with the perrin turbo kits which turbo kit do i have tu buy help!! i want something not to monster!! is it godd the gt3071?
ANSWER: (maybe you should attempt to rewrite this question again when you're NOT have a seizure and everyone can understand it... Thanks! but... From what i do understand, you dont want a monster of an STi. Simple, get a Cobb Accessport, Turbo-back exhaust, intake, a new turbo(perhaps one of the new VF48s), a new intercooler, injectors and fuel pump. That should make your car very fast, but not rediculous and unreliable.)

What doy you think of these turbo kit for my subaru sti?

which of these turbo kits would you get and why( for a subaru wrx STI 2005)?
Which of these turbo kits would you get 1)Greddy T67 (25g)(greddy) 2)HKS GT-RS Turbo (HKS) 3)Perrin Rotated Mount Turbo Kit GT30 or GT35R (perrin) which of these do you choose OR WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE?? AND WHY?
ANSWER: (It really depends on what you plan on doing with the car.. most guys I know with WRX/STi's favor the TD06/07 18g/20g, and the GT30XXR models..These are obscenely large turbos, only truly necessary if you have a car that you plan on tracking often, as the supporting mods make the car hard to handle as a DD. I myself only run a P&P'd VF48, the stock turbo from the 2008-09 STi.. still good for 319hp/ 337 tq, on an 07 WRX. All three companies have excellent reps as far as making reliable power.. but IMO, the garrett ball bearing turbos offer quicker spool, and better flow..)
