VW Turbo Kit FAQ

  1. Turbo kit for Rabbit MKV availiable?

I'm planning on purchasing a VW Rabbit Mark V soon to tune up. I like the GTI and R32 but that's extra money that I can spend where I need elsewhere, since I've seen Rabbits with around 10,000 miles go for $11,000 or so which is very reasonable. I'd like to know if there's a turbo kit available for the Rabbit MKV and if I'd need to change the engine head for the installment. If someone could link me to a kit that would be great. 2.5T would be a beast!

ANSWER: (NGPracing have a turbo rabbit. Not sure if it is a one off kit or not but c2 motorsports makes a kit for the 2.5. https://www.c2motorsports.net/shop/c-164-c2motorsports.aspx)

  2. How much is turbo for vw?

I have 02 jetta and I want o install a twin turbo! How much do you think will cost me? kits and instalation???

ANSWER: (it will cost ya around 200 to 450)

  3. 1998 VW Passat vr6 turbo?

I'm looking to boost a vr6 with 90,000 miles it might not sound like that good of an idea but I'm pretty set on it. my main question is how much would it coast to professionally install a kit i already have? if anyone thinks this is a terrible idea plz let me know.

ANSWER: (you do not say exactly on what the kit consist of.)

  4. Nitrous on my VW jetta?

Hi, i would like to know how much nitrous can i put in my stock 2000 jetta that has the 1.8 engine with turbo? I like to go out to some car show, so i only would what the nos kit to impress some people not use it a lot.

ANSWER: (50 shot would be more than enough. although I wouldn't recommend going straight nitrous on your stock engine. Nitrous is hard on engines not designed for it, which a stock engine is not. If you are going nitrous you definitely need to look at some more upgrades also.)

  5. 2003 wrx vs 2001 vw gti vr6?

I am thinking about selling my 01 gti vr6 to get an awd car. I was thinking about an 03 wrx. Anyway my question is what can car would perform better with mods? I have a turbo kit, upgraded clutch, springs, and rear anti-sway bar ready to put on my vr6 to go to 300hp but if I sold my car and all these parts, with money from work I would have $3000 to spend on mods for my wrx. so would it be more worth staying with my vr6 turbo or going with the wrx? and which car would perform better on the track? (I plan on racing in track days)

ANSWER: (I'd stick with the gti.I saw a Lancer beat a wrx.)

  6. VW Golf VR6 Turbo/mod help?

I am getting a car in may, my dad is co signing for a non-turbo car only, i know it sucks. so when i get the car i am going to turbo it with my own money. I was looking at the golf vr6's 2000-2005. i am new with vw's so i need some help. what is the mk3, mk4, mk's? what is the difference? What is the best? what has the most potential? would this turbo be fine? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-START-TWIN-TURBO-KIT-VW-GOLF-JETTA-AUDI-CORRADO-VR6_W0QQitemZ260363797883QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting any more information would be awesome!!!

ANSWER: (Ok first off, the "mk" are basically the models/bodystyles. Right now it goes from mk1 to mk5 (oldest to newest). The golfs from 2000-2005 are considered mk4. the previous years are mk3 mk2 and mk1. The newer the model, usually the more reliable it is. Also if the model is newer there will be more parts that are available. As of right now mk4's have the most tuning capabilities. If you are going to turbo your car I would recommend getting a turbo made specifically for vws. Its gonna cost you around $2000 to $4000. Also make sure to know whether the vr6 is a 12valve or 24valve.here are some samples:http://www.ctsturbo.com/catalog/MK4_24V_VR6_Turbo_Kits-38-1.htmlhttp://www.ctsturbo.com/catalog/MK4_12V_VR6_Turbo_Kits-46-1.html)

  7. Just curious if i can use the same exhaust manifold from a VW 2.0L 16V engine on my 2.0L 8V engine.?

I'm trying to get this turbo kit installed on my 1996 VW Jetta 2.0L 8V engine, however, the exhaust manifold that came with the turbo kit is placing the turbo directly in the way of the rear engine mounts. I have found an exhaust manifold for a 16V engine which has the turbo mount offset to one side and I’m curious if the part would mount up correctly to the back of the engine block. Thank you for any advice in advance.

ANSWER: (You make it sound like you have the parts so if I am wrong you would know. Simple answer is no they don't have the same ports or port spacing. ASE Cert Auto Tech, 92 GTI16V 2.0L)

  8. I need a Turbo Kit for my 2001 VW golf GLS...?

Does any one know a good turbo kit for my 2.0 liter Golf that won't break the bank?I would really like to turbo this car, the engine is in great shape. Only 74000 miles and I think it would get better gas mileage and make it a little sportier. Thanks! http://www.flickr.com/photos/kassy_chick/3258632531/

ANSWER: (Kinetic offers a few turbo kits for the MKIV 2.0i was gona turbo my 2.0 but mine has too many miles now lol but check it outhttp://www.kineticmotorsport.com/catalog/MKIV_2_0L-257-1.html stage one will get you around 170 hp which is a huge jump from the 110 hp your golf has nowstage two will put you over 200+ which can beat out stock mkiv gtis and edge out the VR6. you can also bolt on a supercharger whch wont get you as much hp or you can piece together a turbo kit of your own. here is some info on the kinetic kithttp://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3142037 here is a link to succesfull 2.0T ohttp://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3272469 if you dont want to break the back serch here for 2.o turbo kits iv seen some for as low as 1000 bucks but usally naround 1500-2200http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=113)

  9. I have a 2004 VW Passat 1.8T. Is there any way I can twin turbo it? Any kits out there?

ANSWER: (if you twin turboed your INLINE 4 cylinder the lag would be so great that you would NEVER see full boost until about 6,000 rpm's and you would really lose any torque that you already have. Twin turbos are a great setup on a motor in the "v" configuration due to having 2 heads to pull from. An inline car would rely on the only head to get both turbos spinning and boosting. Your best bet is to get a turbo upgrade and a ECU reflash from ABD racing. The reflash alone on your car will net you about 45-50 wheel hp. A little larger turbo will add another 30-40 wheel hp at the stock/reflashed boost levels.)

  10. 1998 Audi A8 V8 4.2 5spd... supercharge or turbo?

I want to supercharge my 1998 A8. Should i go for a Turbo? What kind of supercharger ? where to order the kit? Shell i get involved in this project? Estimate cost. Would i be better of trading it for a turbo VW, a GTI or Jetta or what is your hint? I need a fast "toy" but already have the A8 witch i love.

ANSWER: (Great car, but generally in terms performance additions there is not a huge aftermarket.A turbocharger, and a supercharger both serve same purpose and provide equivalent power increase when they are installed at the same boost levels.Generally for low boost installations (which yours would be) a supercharger tends to be more effective as its lighter, runs cooler and usually is less expensive. Installation costs are certainly much lower.Generally power delivery from a supercharger engages earlier and is more linear than a turbo.Turbo's are well suited to higher boost installations or where there is limited engine compartment space or where a standard application is not available and a custom set up has to be fabricated using a "universal" turbine.Your car is ideal for extra power, but performance does not come cheap.Motodyne does have, I think a bolt on installation available for your car: http://www.motodyne.com/frames/4.2LSC.html this provides - at engagement a 50% increase over stock hp.By reversing the formula for hp increase from forced induction I calculate this as a typical mild boost (for stock installation) of about 7psi.The addition of 125hp would make the car seriously quick. Cost of the kit is approx. $10,000, plus unless you can do the installation yourself, shop & labor time at a performance shop. All in with a pro-tune to reset the engine's management system I would expect you are looking at 3days labor.Lastly bcause of the extreme power delivery of forced induction (regardless of supercharger or turbo) the existing engine may have to be upgraded to handle heat and extra stresses involved. At the very least, performance (forged) bolts and possibly a build out of the bottom end with forged internals. This is hard to estimate and is dependent on the extent to which the stock engine has to be prepared to provide for margin of safety.A turbo installation, all in I expect will be the same or a little more (less for required parts, far more for labor and custom fabrication). I recommend, you get on an Audi owners forum, lots of owners have gone where you are considering going - and are happy to share information/recommendations.Perhaps herehttp://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/175795.phtml Hope this assists with your decision (personally I would enhance your existing car vs. buying smaller VW product....but thats really your call). regards, {engineer (owner of past/present supercharged cars, fan of forced induction)}.)

  11. How do i tune my 05 VW Beetle?

ok so my dad thought it would be a good idea to buy me a 2005 VW beetle convertible for christmas. My dad is a man with a sense of humor.I was planning on selling it but i found some tuned beetles onlne and i thought they were cool. I dont have a turbo and i cant put a spoiler on it because its a convertible. I would like to tune this car but i dont know much about it. I was wondering what is the first step? New intake, Exaust? i cant buy a turbo kit yet and i just want to get a little more juice out of it. I also want it to look good. By the way its automatic but it does have the little toggle shift. Help Plz

ANSWER: (It was voted in consumer reports and Motor trend worst car made 3 years in a row with lowest resale and highest repairs with little safety.)

  12. What is a good turbokit to use on a 1997 vw jetta 2.0(115hp) ?

i have a 97 volkswagen jetta 2.0 5 speed. and i want to turbo charge it. Does anybody know what i need to buy in order to get the car turbo charge ready , and where i can buy it for example websites etc.. and also whats a good turbo kit to use on the car. 13. How far can a vw jetta 1.6 engine go(HP)?

ive got a 2002 vw bora 1.6 litre engine with an auto trans producing 102hp how far can the engine go in matters of hp if i added a turbo kit with intakes and exhausts,etc.... and is it safe???

ANSWER: (I have to agree with the previous answer. The 1.6 is barely worth bothering with. If you spent a heap of cash you could see 200hp, but why bother? Perhaps a 2.0, V5, or even a V6 would be a better option. The Bora was sold with all these motors so fitment shouldn't be too much of a drama. My '03 4Motion V6 had 204bhp stock and with a few simple tweaks (exhaust, chip, intake) it will have about 230 or so. All that with great economy, superb reliability and enough grunt to have some fun.)

  14. 1999 VW Golf 2.0 (TURBO)?

Ive got a mk4 golf GL 2.0L and i was wondering if i could put a full turbo kit in it with an intercooler and everything???? ive researched this quite a bit and i think someone told me that turboing a 2.0L engine will be costly in the long run but im not sure if thats true...any ideas of what i could do and where i can find a good turbo????

ANSWER: (You can turbo it. It's not an extremely hard process but it's time consuming. As long as it's done correctly and you don't raise the boost too much it'll run great. It's also a good idea to get aftermarket headstuds. The stock ones expand more easily and are much more likely to break. http://www.skmotorsport.com/oscom/product_info.php?cPath=55_57&products_id=810http://www.ctsturbo.com/products/KINETIC_MOTORSPORT_MKIV_2_0L_STAGE1_TURBO_KIT-91-1.html)

  17. 02 wv beetle 1.8tdi loss of power?

300k miles serviced 1mo ago new timing belt (whole kit installed) intake serviced (all carbon deposits removed) new turbo charger ($1300 from vw dealer it was waht they told me was the problem) new filters. 1 tdi injector replaced due to failure. new heavy duty clutch with flywheel vw dealer had it for 2 weeks can't figure out the problem, no codes on ecm, whole exhaust system replaced, no power still, this had cost me $4000 so far

ANSWER: (If you've spent 4 grand and the problem is still there, I would contact Vw direct and explain to them you spent 4 g's and the problem is still there. Tell them you want a FULL REFUND or a new car. I would be ballistic if I were you. Then I would take it to another dealership or a shop with multiple master technicians. If you live in Arizona let me know, I will refer one to you.)

  21. Thinking about converting my VW diesel to bio-diesel?

I have a 1998 VW new beetle turbo-diesel. There is a conversion kit on the net that for $800 it can run on vegetable oil. Anyone done this? I heard it can clog, smells like french fries, and the back of you car gets covered with a thick, gooey, black residue. Is it worth the trouble? At $5.10 a gallon for diesel type 2, I am really considering this.Do you have experience with this conversion kit and do you recommend it?

ANSWER: (Wow, there is a lot of mis-information on Bio-diesel on this website, you CANNOT run straight bio diesel in any car without conversion, bio-diesel is acidic, it will disolve any organic materials this means Rubber!!! your hoses are Rubber! there are two options here, bio-diesel, or vegetable oil, there are up and downsides to both, bio diesel on a jetta is quite a simple conversion, since there are no organic internal gaskets on that motor, all you need to do is replace your hoses with viton or tygothane, there are many links for this at www.biodieselnow.org as for vegetable oil, by far the best kit on the market is the kit by www.greasecar.com the advantage of this is you do not need to make your bio diesel or buy it wholesale(yes there are many places to buy it, you do not have to "make it in your garage"), you can just put in Filtered straight vegetable oil. the downside to this is that the car cannot start from cold on vegetable oil, so you have a separate fuel tank for the oil, and you have to remember to flush out the fuel lines EVERY time you shut off the car, or it will not start again)

  22. i have a 2002 vw gti vr6 and i cant find an exhaust system or turbo kit for it, where can i find this?

  23. what company makes a conversion kit to install a EJ20 subaru motor into a 1986 vw vanagon?

2002 Subaru WRX (EJ20) turbo motor conversion

ANSWER: (Kennedy Engineered Products makes one, but I'd rather see you join the subaruvanagon list on Yahoo as they are there stricly for folks putting subies in Vanagons. I'll do it myself when I wear out the rebuild on my Vanagon motor. You need to shorten the oil pan and modify the subie wiring harness which is no small task, but all this is covered in the list archives for the subie list. I won't do the turbo, but good luck. With some additional mods, the SVX 6 cylinder will fit in there too.)

  24. What a turbo that thats stronger than a stock turbo in a Jetta GLI 1.8l?

I was woundering if this turbo is stronger than the stock turbo in my car because i want more power out of it. ANSWER: (You may not need a different turbo. You may only need a boost controller.Take a good look at the kit, what does it have that you do not already have?An inter cooler? If I was going to upgrade a turbo charger, I would make sure that it was not a cheap China look-alike.I would also go to one that is both oil and water cooled like a TD05.My punch line is just get a boost controller and a bigger inter cooler.)

  25. Turbo for my 1600cc vw?

  26. 1.8T VW Passat got oil in turbo. Is the turbo rebuildable?

1.8T VW Passat got oil in turbo. Is the turbo rebuildable? My turbo got oil in it somehow, I think the people who did the oil change put too much oil and that's why it happened. Well the car started to smoke so I took it to a shop and they said I need a new turbo. I am wondering if i can rebuild it with a Turbo Rebuilt Kit. If can anyone recommend me a Rebuilt Kit that maybe they have used before.Thank You.

  27. What do u think of a vw scirocco ?

oh and if anyone knows where i can get a turbo kit for a 1984 vw scirocco gti wolfsburge edition pls let me know THX! :)

ANSWER: (I like it. I do not like the tail lights that much, but the car looks mean and fast.As for the turbo kit. I do not think they make turbo kits for that car, but if they do, it would definately be in the VW magazine. You can get this magazine at any Barnes and Nobles store.)

  28. I have a 1992 VW Jetta 1.8L can i use this turbo?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Audi-Volkswagen-A4-TT-Golf-GTI-1-8T-T3-T4-Turbo-Kit-20v_W0QQitemZ270198652082QQihZ017QQcategoryZ33742QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem first off is that legit, and second even though its for a newer model car can i still put it on my engine? if no what would i need to change on my engine to make that work

ANSWER: (This kit will not work for your car because it was made for a VW 1.8t 20v. Which means the car is a 1.8 liter and has 20 vavles and already has a turbo for it. You have a 1.8 non turbo and also it has 8 vavles. The internals on your car's engine will not be able to handle the addition power produced by the turbo. Also most turbo kits on ebay are offer cheap because they are very unreliable and cheaply put together kits. To turbo charge you car you are looking at a big investment due to the engine and the design of the car. You can try http://www.kineticmotorsport.com/blog/ and http://www.atpturbo.com/ both these companies have great feedback and have years of experierence dealing with modifying volkswagens.)

  29. Issues with VW TDI Turbo?

Our mechanic claims he has found a deteriorating Wastegate Activator in our Golf TDI that needs to be replaced. They say it can only be ordered as part of the whole turbo which runs $1,000.00 w/out labor. The car has 114,000 miles on it. It was running a bit sluggish, thought it might need a new filter...Anyway, anyone know anything about this and if we can get the part seperately (approx $100...and not need to get the whole kit and kaboodle?? PLus any ideas on the labor time this may take to replace? Thanks for any help!

ANSWER: (on that particular turbo it is not serviced seperate, you maybe able to get a used one from salvage yard but it may have the same issue. usually approx 5 hrs labor give or take a little. you might check vwdieselparts.com too. make sure that the intake is not plugged with carbon on the car this will cause a lack of power issue more common than turbo problems if intake is plugged will need to be removed and cleaned the MAF sensor should be replaced too when doing this.)

ANSWER: (super charger, headers, exhaust, intake, fuel pumps, new pipes. visual suspension lower it, tint, sounds , rims, lip kit turbo charger with blow off valve would be less horsepower, but sounds sick and will give u enough hp for u)
