Cheap Turbo Kits Frequently Asked Questions

Turbo Build Questions Beginner?

I have a B18a1 in a 1992 acura integra and was planing in boosting it with stock internals all around . Need a how to .. in build a kit for the cari know i need to do a compression test to see if its in good health . engine overall has 120xxx miles . i am a beginner into the whole scene and i am still learning . i would like to build a mild build nothing aggressive pulling major numbers of hp . i don't want cheap turbo kit either but not an expensive one either mild range price under 2 grand ?i would appreciate if u would help me out pick the build parts and average price for each and where to get online if at good price re manufactured turbo is also good ? Lists of all parts is a must simply because i am new * * * * * * i am asking this question because i dont know every thing or act like i do and need answers i have done research but i need a straight forward answer . thanks for read and highly appreciate answers !

ANSWER: (I understand what it is you want to do, and why you want to do it, the problem you have is that your half assed way of going about it is going to have you parked in the driveway in a destroyed engine in a big puddle of oil IF YOU ARE LUCKY. HONESTLY as the other answerer said theree is a right way and a wrong way and since you have absolutely no clue because you have no experience you need to get a job in a performance shop first and spend time learning to do what it is you want to do safetly and correctly. You cannot put a turbo on any engine with 120,000 miles. that is asking for an explosion. The engine needs to be rebuilt with stronger internals and a TRANSMISSION that can handle the extra power at the same time. A turbo puts huge stress on a motor anytime you plan to force huge quantities of air in one end it needs to be strong enough to hold up until it makes it out the other end. Because things do happen, missed shifts, late shifts, excited shifts from the human errror side of the equation you must overbuild the strength of the engine for this to work. I wish you all the best, but you need a lot more information and a lot more expertise to do this right and get your car to run the way that you want it to.)

What turbo should I get for my civic si?

I got a 2000 civic si with the b16, and I live in a small town and there is only a couple of places to tune my car at. But both places have completely different ideas about my car. One is saying if I can get a cheap turbo set up for 3-4 grand and maybe I will be pushing 250 whp. The other shop is telling me for 4 grand I could be pushing 350-400hp. When I bought the car I was planning to put an ebay turbo kit on, but it seems everybody is against it. I went on youtube to look at some ebay turbo kits to see how well they run, and everybody that has it says they are working just fine. A couple of people are saying they are running a couple of years on the same ebay turbo with no problem. I don't know much about this import tuning I just want a fun and quick car to putts around in and spending the least amount of money as possible. I am not expecting to win any races and I will be happy with 250 whp. My question is are ebay turbo's bad as everybody seems to think they are, and how much hp would I be expecting out of a b16 if I had them install the turbo for around 4 grand.

ANSWER: (Take real time to think about this! Turbo and 250 WHP you will be looking at brakes, suspension and maybe realistically forged pistons For 5k you can get an Impreza or Evo4 in the UK already part modded.)

First time car tuner in need of help?

Okay I'm about to get my first car, and the things I want to do is install a turbo kit,and change the cams along with do so some fabrication with the seats etc. How much would a good but cheap turbo kit cost for a Honda civic or Mitsubishi eclipse. What tips or tricks can be given for this

ANSWER: (Ok first of fuck the honda I own an evo x and my first car was a 2nd gen gst eclipse its way more worth your money and hondas don't come from the factory stock with a turbo. Get your self a1st or 2nd gen eclipse preferably a gst or gsx the difference is all wheel drive as for turbo upgrade I wouldn't suggest it right off the bat start with simple mods like intake and exhaust cams are good but highly suggest computer work done first or your fuel maps will be fucked up)

why are turbo kits on ebay so cheap?

i have a 2000 jetta vr6 and i wanna turbo it baddd. me and my stepdad know a great mechanic who does all audi/volkswagen/porche installations and hes doing the manual very cheap. i dont mind spending like 3 grand for a good stage 2 or 3 turbo, but i found a link to ebay and they are rediculously cheap and sound very promising (here is one) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1998-1999-2000-2001-2002-VW-JETTA-GLX-VR6-TURBO-KIT-11P-/170461130694?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27b0466fc6can anyone tell me if this thing is legit? because if so itll save me a pretty penny.

ANSWER: (Those kits are generally useless because either the manifold will eventually crack or the turbo will blow and send bits into your oil. I have known a few setups that run that ebay turbo for no more than a few months before it gets shredded to bits. Not exactly top quality to say the least. FIrst off preparing your car for a turbo doesn't involve putting a SICK AZZ kit on it from ebay. THe motor has to be prepped for low compression including new pistons, headgaskets, bearings at the least. Fuel flow must be measured and most likely a new strong race pump is going to be needed along with fuel injectors. A kit that you piece together properly yourself would be of much better quality. That turbo kit on ebay is only good for the clamps and general pieces other than the turbo and manifold itself. You get what you pay for when it comes to performance.)

aprox cost of turbo install?

i have a 95 nissan sentra gxe.i would like to know the aproximate cost of having a garage install a turbo on my car. also where could i find a good cheap turbo kit for that model that they could install for me? thanks!

ANSWER: (A turbo kit for a Sentra will cost about 3 thousand dollars, and I have no idea about installation. But it doesn't matter. Slapping a turbo onto a 15 year old car, that I assume is poorly maintained because you seem to be fairly stupid, is never a good idea. Things will start to blow up.)

Cheap turbo kit or supercharger?

I have a 1994 3.4 liter camaro yeah i know not the most powerful engine out there anyway I need a turbo kit or supercharger or even some good performance upgrades I am on a pretty tight budget but I would appreciate some comments and prices thanks

ANSWER: (there is nothing that will improve the horsepower on your v6, it would be cheaper to put a v8 under the hood, a turbo charger would be a minimum of four grand (parts alone) and a 3.4 is not something you will want to turbocharge, it cannot take the stress.)

Can you turbo a 97 5.0L Explorer or give it more HP cheap?

2wd Auto W/OD 1997 Ford Explorer! I was wondering how much and what kind of turbo kit i could use if I could use one at all? We put 275/45R20's on it and the stock 5.0L wont spin the tires so i need more HP If anything little I could do to make more HP help.

ANSWER: (Turbocharging an old engine is a recipe for disaster. Factory turbocharged engines are designed form the ground up for the added stress of a turbocharger. The bottom end is beefed up, forged pistons are normally standard, beefed up connecting rods and bearings are all standard as is a lower compression than a similar naturally aspirated engine. Shelling out $3,500 to $5,000 for a turbo, installation, new ECU, exhaust mods, etc. would be a complete waste of money as your 14 year old engine would give up the ghost in very short order. If you want it all to stay together, add on another $3,000 to $5,000 for a proper engine rebuild first. But now you'll have a 14 year old Explorer that you've spent upwards of $10,000 on in order to grind up your new tires. At most you'll add $2,500 to its value. If you want to do something that will give you reasonable bang for the buck, add a cold air intake and cat-back exhaust system. You probably won't be able to burn those 275s but it will have a bit more grunt and will sound sweeter for much less than $1,000. Much more than that just does not make sense on a 14 year old nondescript SUV.If you want to burn up tires, sell the Explorer and add the $10k you'd waste on building up the engine and get a 2003 to 2005 Mustang GT with about 60,000 miles on it that will light 'em up all day long and not come apart at the seams.)

how much would it cost to convert an automatic transmission in a Chevy Aveo5 to a manual transmission?

I have a chevy aveo 5 and want to convert it to a manuel (stick).... also... where do i find a lift kit for it... and a cheap turbo kit

ANSWER: (I would guess it would cost about $3000. Never heard of a lift it, would have to be custom work, another $3000 at least. Turbo would be $3000 as well. Then the transmission and axles will have to be upgraded, another $3000. I don't know whats inside your engine but you will probably need custom foraged internals, another $3000.If someone gave me an aveo i could probably make it pretty bad ass for $5000 in parts, scraping the entire drivetrain and doing everything myself. But why would i, car looks ridiculous to begin with.Sell it can buy something else. Or just buy a old Camaro for $5000.)

i just got a 89 nissan 300zx turbo v6 could anyone help me find rebuild kits and other cheap parts?

i need to find cheap parts for it i want to completely rebuild it im gonna put in new rings an seals new cam and a better turbo bigger lifters and new valves i just dont know were to start or a good place to order parts so if anybody could help that would be great

ANSWER: (John Paul, you again are showing your lack of knowledge on Z31's. I suggest you don't answer these types of questions anymore. The misinformation you spread is terrible and damaging to the owners.Richard, first you will want to start reading a few Z31 specific sites that I will post below. Our cars have huge potential. Parts are a little harder to come by than most other sports cars but when its all over you will have a true one of a kind car as almost everyone's setup is different..For a basic rebuild, tear the engine down and verify what size bearings and rings you need. Spend the money on OEM Nissan bearings and rings. Cleavite is a good alternative as well. An Advance Auto full engine gasket kit is fine with exception of the head gaskets. Go ahead and get a set of OEM Nissan head gaskets. You will thank yourself for that later.Ferrea sells over sized valves for our engines. There are no oversized lifters but you will need new ones to go with new cams. OEM is fine as is Cleavite. For Cams, Schnieder and Isky have nice grinds available to us for decent prices. Schnieder has excellent 110lb double valve springs available for $100. A must for revving over 6K RPM.You will want to add an intercooler. There is a hard to find Greddy IC kit for 1200 bucks. I personally would just buy a nice IC core and some piping. That's what I did with mine. Cost me 400 bucks total. Certified Muffler offers a nice 3in turbo back exhaust system for our cars. Either with a hi-flow cat or catless.I'd recommend investing in NIStune or finding someone selling a JWT 4-BAR kit. A larger turbo is going to demand more fuel. The stock fuel system is not good for much above 12psi on the stock turbo. Another good upgrade would be a gutted upper plenum. You can find these on ebay for 150-400 dollars. You can pair that up with a 240SX 60mm throttlebody for nice results.Realistically with Cams, valves, springs, IC, gutted plenum, larger turbo and 3in turbo back with good tuning you can achieve over 400whp on the stock bottom end. You can use forged connecting rods and pistons for the 300ZX Twinturbo in our engines. They fit just fine. With forged internals you can push these engines to the limits of 600+ hp but that will require porting and polishing of the heads. But first I recommend you read as much as you can on these sites. Sign up read through them, ask questions and look at other peoples builds. Also check the classifieds on the sites. Lots of good parts for sale for cheap. Feel free to send me a message and I'll share pictures and pointers from my build with you. Good luck with it!)

How much does a turbo kit cost?

I own a 97 toyota celica st and i was wondering how much it would cost to install a turbo. Im not looking for the 2000 dollar ones, but one thats somewhat cheap (less than 1k). What kind of stuff has to be adjusted to make the turbo work properly? approximately how much would it cost with parts and labor? any suggestions and information is greatly appreciated. thanks

ANSWER: (Your best bet is going to require a lot of creativity. Your project is possible on the budget you're looking at, but you won't be able to buy a one-and-done kit. I did this successfully for $350 on my first car when I was 16, and I learned a lot.A used Garrett journal-bearing turbo with acceptable shaft play is a start (I'd suggest finding someone who knows turbochargers to evaluate the condition of a used turbo). The T3 and T25 (a smaller variant of the T3) were used on myriad cars (original Saab 900 and 9000, many Volvos, and other cars from the mid 1980s to late 1990s). I've seen them as cheap as $50 for examples that were good enough to bolt right up. Furthermore, the rectangular ("Garrett") flange is the most common found on aftermarket exhaust manifolds, which raises a new point, the exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold and downpipe will likely be the most expensive and/or challenging part to obtain or fabricate. I believe your car has the 5S-FE corporate engine, which was super common (Camrys, Celicas and more had it) meaning you can probably find a cheap exhaust manifold on eBay. You'll also need:A recirculating valve ("blow-off" valve, used Bosch ones from Audi A4/S4/A6 turbo, Porsche 993/996 Turbo are easy to mount and effective, but NOT from Saab or 1980s Porsche). An intercooler. This isn't absolutely necessary, but on a high-compression engine like yours you'll really want it. Look for used ones pulled from a junk Porsche 944 Turbo (excellent), Saab 9000 Turbo (ok), Mitsubishi Starion (excellent) and so on. Try to avoid side- or top-mounted intercoolers, as they tend not to clear the hood on cars not designed for it and offer (generally) inferior performance. Manufacturers mount them on top of the engine for convenience reasons.Hard pipes and rubber couplers for charged-air plumbing. Buy a couple of those polished aluminum intake kits for an Integra on eBay and maybe a few extra bends plus some rubber couplers from TurboHoses.com or equivalent.Vacuum Lines. Replace all of them and get one-way check valves for the HVAC system, fuel evaporation system and crankcase ventilation.Adjustable, rising-rate fuel pressure regulator. You're doing this cheap, so changing injectors and computer programming are above and beyond. The adjustable fuel pressure regulator allows you to increase fuel across the injectors, forcing more fuel through them under boost. Oil and coolant lines for the turbocharger. This is the next-most tricky after the exhaust manifold. You'll need to find a place to tap for pressurized oil (maybe an oil pressure sensor port on the head you could branch off of) and then dump back into oil pan.I would suggest a wideband oxygen sensor, but if you can't afford it, at least replace the factory one with new and place a gauge into it so you can get at least a basic idea of the mixture situation in your engine. You'll have some other issues to address if you have a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor rather than a hot-wire or "barn-door" type sensor for measuring air on your engine. Barn-door and hot-wire types will work fine, but a MAP sensor will likely be unable to register positive pressure at the manifold; it is only intended to read vacuum. You can get MAP sensors that are able to register the positive pressure, but this is something you'll have to research independently ONLY IF you have a MAP sensor. Finally, don't worry about a boost controller. You won't be able to run much more than 7 or 8 pounds of boost at best because you have high compression and will lack sophisticated fuel management, and the wastegate found on most Garrett turbochargers can be adjusted up to this pressure. A boost controller will only tempt you to turn up the boost and destroy your engine, which would happen very quickly. You could also burn up your clutch and blow your transmission if you have an automatic. In fact, if you have an automatic, you shouldn't even consider this project. Also remember, there's a decent chance you could blow your headgasket, especially if you're reckless and impatient while setting up the fuel and boost levels. You could also just sell your car and buy one with a turbo from the factory. Way easier, more reliable and more room for power.)

Turbo Kits for 1995 Nissan 300zx?

Hello, I'm interested in buying a turbo kit for my 300zx, I would just like to get some advice from people with 300zx's. would a universal turbo work fine? I understand that there is no space since the engine is big and takes up almost all the space in the engine bay. Also, should i just get a good turbo for $3,000 or a cheap one for $1,000? What about rebuilt turbos?...would I have to change other stuff like pistons, maybe crankshaft, valves etc. any information or advice would be helpfiul, just make sure it relates to turbo kits for 300zx lol thanks a bunch guys

ANSWER: (well i can tell u right now. get what you pay for haha u want a cheap one then ur gonna get a cheap one. if i were to buy them i would go for just buying a new and good one. that way u knw that ur not gonna have a cheap one that could potentially be garbage power or go out 10000miles down the road haha. is your nissan already turboed? if not ur gonna have to do ALOT of swapping from ecu to engine harness to pretty much everything. u wouldnt have to change any of that stuff unless u were gonna go for more boost and power. ur stock engine with all stock internals can handle up to 12 to 13 psi so u wouldnt need to switch them (of course thats assuming its a tt already). if you want more information about things there is a huge forum of guys just talkin about pure 300zx stuff. its called www.twinturbo.net they answer pretty much everything. if you need more sites on turbo kits go to www.conceptzperformance.com or www.z1motorsports.com thats where i do all my shopping.
ford zx2 automatic to manual conversion and turbo kit?

im looking to figure out how to convert my 2000 zx2 automatic to a manual.and to find a nice cheap complete turbo kit

ANSWER: (Better not, the cost to get someone to do that would be way, way more than just purchasing a used stick shift turbo car. The turbo conversion alone is nearly impossible, you have to do so much to the engine besides installing the turbo system itself so it doesn't blow up after 50 miles, it really isn't worth it.Look for an old, early 90s Mercury Capri. They are some nice light cars that are actually pretty well made, turbo stick shift so fast as hell and, they are convertibles! Can't go wrong. If you are serious about the conversion though you are looking at a minimum of $5000 investment, probably a lot more.)

ANSWER: (Most of the time those turbo kits on ebay really only come with a random assortment of bent tubing, a knock-off turbo, and some silicone couplers. They are missing A LOT of parts. One thing to keep in mind is to never try skimp on the turbo itself, because that is the heart of the whole operation. If you have some decent fabrication skills, and you know what parts are missing. you could probably make it work.Instead of turbocharging your current motor, have you considered swapping in an engine that is already turbocharged? The sr20det is a turbocharged engine that was offered in Japan in the 240sx, and is a relatively easy swap to perform, although it might end up costing more that an expensive turbo kit for your current engine, which I'm assuming is a ka24de.Just remember that if you cheap out on a turbo kit now, it will end up costing you more down the road, so your best bet is to either save up for a legitimate turbo kit, or save up for a faster car.)
